Job summary

City of Indianapolis & Marion County is seeking a field maintenance worker to respond to reactive service requests and emergency repairs issued by DPW Customer Service. The role is labor-intensive and performed outdoors in all weather conditions.

You will perform quick-fix tasks, operate heavy equipment, maintain accurate records, and ensure safety standards while coordinating with teams. Experience with storm water facilities and construction is preferred; Class B CDL is required or preferred.

Qualifications

• High school Diploma or equivalent; 4+ years in construction/maintenance
• Minimum 2 years experience operating various heavy equipment systems
• Class B license required; Class A preferred; ability to pass pre-employment driving physical

Responsibilities

• Performs quick-fix, labor intensive tasks including minor storm water facility clearing and repair, debris removal and storm structure lid replacement and re-setting
• Understands and generates Service Requests, Work Orders and/or report forms using standard maintenance terminology
• Determine the responsibility of incoming service requests and take appropriate actions
• Maintains accurate, standardized data records of time/materials for each repair/response assignment
• Assumes accountability for tools and equipment provided by the City for rapid response functions
• Observes all on-site safety regulations and Department SOPs
• Assesses repair needs and determines supplies/equipment necessary for emergency/quick-fix solutions
• Operates hand/power tools and specialized maintenance equipment
• Provides assistance to workers in other classifications
• Works overtime as assigned
• Work outdoors in all weather and on rough surfaces; may involve climbing and exposure to noise, dust, fumes, and contaminants
• Cope with emergencies and high-pressure situations; read/instructions and maps; maintain daily records

Overview

Position is responsible for responding in a reactive manner to requests for service and emergency repair tasks as assigned by DPW Customer Service response management. Position is expected to perform labor intensive tasks as required. Periodic citizen contacts may occasionally be adversarial in nature and the employee must use skill and judgment to resolve both technical and interpersonal problems related to field situations and problem resolution solutions.

Responsibilities

• Performs quick-fix, labor intensive tasks inclusive of minor storm water facility clearing and repair, debris removal and storm structure lid replacement and re-setting.
• Understands and generates Service Requests, Work Orders and/or report forms in a complete/concise manner using appropriate and standardized maintenance terminology.
• Determine the responsibility of incoming service requests, whether public or private, and takes appropriate actions as applicable.
• Maintains accurate, standardized InforPS data formatted record keeping of all time/materials allotted for each repair/response assignment.
• Assumes accountability and maintenance responsibility for all tools and equipment supplied by the City for rapid response functions and tasks.
• Observes all on-site safety regulations and Departmental SOPs.
• Assess service repair needs and determines supplies, materials and/or equipment necessary to perform emergency/quick-fix repair solutions.

• Work is performed primarily outside with exposure to all types of weather, including direct sunlight, high heat and extreme cold conditions. Work may involve rough uneven surfaces, climbing/descending slopes/embankments, jumping over or into/climbing out of trenches and navigating other obstacles. Incumbent is exposed to noise, dust, fumes, smoke, gases, grease, oils, vibrations and contaminated water/fluids. Work may occur on slippery surfaces around machinery with moving parts and around moving vehicles and objects. Incumbent works in a team with others or alone depending on assignments.

Qualifications

• High school Diploma or equivalent, with a minimum of four (4) years of work related experience with construction and/or maintenance projects and equipment including a minimum of two (2) years of experience in the operation of various heavy equipment systems.
• A valid Class A CDL Driver’s License is preferred; Class B license is required and the ability to pass a pre-employment driving physical is required.
• Ability to obtain a thorough knowledge of City of Indianapolis street and storm water facility construction standards and specifications.
• Ability to obtain a thorough knowledge of Indiana Occupational Safety and Health Act (IOSHA) Regulations.
• Ability to obtain a thorough knowledge of general construction and/or maintenance projects and methods.
• Familiarity with the City of Indianapolis Traffic Control Manual and Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) Regulations.
• Must be able to comprehend/apply both written and verbal instructions; ability to read and interpret maps, guides and manuals.
• Familiarity with City and County streets/roads; maintain accurate and detailed daily records.
• Physical ability to lift and carry at least fifty (50) pounds for extended distances (approximately 150 feet).
• Utilize standard city issued utility tools to remove and replace a range of storm water or other structure castings.
• Exercise sound and practical independent judgment.
• Operate and generally maintain a variety of tools and equipment.
• Cope with/manage emergencies and high-pressure situations.
• Interpret and follow instructions, plans, standards, specifications and regulations.
• Acceptable vision to drive and perform response tasks at night/low-light conditions.
• Must be a Marion County resident within six (6) months from date of hire.
