Job description

You will serve as a RANGE TECHNICIAN. The primary purpose of the position is to perform technical rangeland management work in support of natural resource management programs in rangeland environments.

Wyoming Locations -

  • Rawlins, WY
  • Rock Springs, WY

  • Lander, WY

Utah Locations -

  • Moab, UT
  • Fillmore, UT
  • Vernal, UT

Pay will vary based on grade level and/or duty location for which you're selected. First time hires to the Federal government normally start at the step 1 rate.

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-08/31/2026-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.

To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST state either "full-time" (or "40 hours a week") or "part-time" with the number of hours worked per week to ensure proper crediting of specialized experience. Failure to adequately provide information needed to determine number of hours worked in each position may result in that time not being credited when evaluating qualifying experience. For periods of time that reflect military service, the DD-214 or Statement of Service is sufficient to meet the full and/or part-time hours requirement as the service dates will be reflected.

To qualify for this position at the GS-05 grade level
  • Specialized Experience Requirement: you must possess at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Specialized experience is defined as demonstrated experience: Utilizing various computer programs to maintain and retrieve information from automated applications and data systems. Communicating effectively orally and in writing in order to present information in easy-to-understand formats that increase understanding of Bureau programs, policies, and objectives. Conducting tests and inspections using work methods and techniques that were standard to rangeland management functions. You must include hours per week worked. -OR-
  • Education: Successful completion of at least a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree from an accredited or pre-accredited institution (a) with major study in an appropriate field of Forestry, range management, agriculture, or a subject‑matter field directly related to the position; OR (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of the following courses: forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources (except marine fisheries and oceanography), outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering, or wildland fire science. No more than 6 semester hours in mathematics is creditable. You must include transcripts. -OR-
  • Combination of education and experience. To combine education and experience, first divide your total fulltime months of qualifying experience by 12. Then, divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify.). You must include hours per week and transcripts.
To qualify for this position at the GS-06 grade level
  • Specialized Experience Requirement: you must possess at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Specialized experience is defined as demonstrated experience: Utilizing various computer programs to maintain and retrieve information from automated applications and data systems. Communicating effectively orally and in writing in order to present information in easy-to-understand formats that increase understanding of Bureau programs, policies, and objectives. Conducting tests and inspections using work methods and techniques that were standard to rangeland management functions. Recommending or performing rangeland management support work such as the installation of boundary and drift fences, water developments, implementation of re‑vegetation projects, or the treatment of noxious weeds. Performing a variety of assignments in support of rangeland management programs or projects where methods and techniques were generally applicable but sometimes required minor deviations based on field conditions. You must include hours per week worked. -OR-
  • Education: Successful completion of at least a half year (i.e., 9 semester hours) of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as forestry, range management, agriculture, or a subject‑matter field directly related to the position. You must include transcripts. -OR-
  • Combination of education and experience. To combine education and experience, first divide your total fulltime months of qualifying experience by 12. Then, divide your semester hours of graduate education by 9. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify.). You must include hours per week and transcripts.
To qualify for this position at the GS-07 grade level
  • Specialized Experience Requirement: you must possess at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Specialized experience is defined as demonstrated experience: Utilizing various computer programs to maintain and retrieve information from automated applications and data systems. Communicating effectively orally and in writing in order to present information in easy-to-understand formats that increase understanding of Bureau programs, policies, and objectives. Conducting tests and inspections using work methods and techniques that were standard to rangeland management functions. Recommending or performing rangeland management support work such as the installation of boundary and drift fences, water developments, implementation of re‑vegetation projects, or the treatment of noxious weeds. Performing a variety of assignments in support of rangeland management programs or projects where methods and techniques were generally applicable but sometimes required minor deviations based on field conditions. Assisting in range capacity studies such as allotment analysis and production utilization studies. Assisting in planning a wide variety of rangeland management support work such as re‑vegetation, fencing, spring developments, cattle guard placement, erosion control, or the treatment of noxious weeds. Planning, directing, and/or performing the implementation of rangeland management projects and program goals and independently applying conventional solutions and practices for a variety of problems. You must include hours per week worked. -OR-
  • Education: Successful completion of at least one full academic year of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as forestry, range management, agriculture, or a subject‑matter field directly related to the position. You must include transcripts. -OR-
  • Combination of education and experience. To combine education and experience, first take divide your total fulltime months of qualifying experience by 12. Then, divide your semester hours of graduate education by 18. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify.).
