Job summary

New Mexico Department of Wildlife seeks a dedicated hatchery technician to assist in producing rainbow trout and other coldwater fish species at the Los Ojos Hatchery. You will help maintain equipment, support daily propagation activities, and ensure high standards of cleanliness and health in an outdoor work setting.

The role involves lifting, standing, and operating hatchery machinery, with occasional travel and variable weather.

Qualifications

  • Associate degree or higher in Biology, Wildlife Science, Animal Husbandry, Natural Sciences, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Two years in a related experience in a fish hatchery, animal husbandry, aquaculture, ranching, farming, or similarly related field.
  • Experience with mechanics, welding, carpentry, equipment operation, and basic facility maintenance is beneficial.

Responsibilities

  • Perform daily visual evaluation of production inventories, hatchery rearing units, and facilities to determine best daily work priorities.
  • Report unusual observations or concerns to supervisor and complete assigned tasks for production, distribution, and maintenance.
  • Participate in daily fish propagation activities and prioritize tasks for efficient use of work time.
