Job summary

Road & Rail Services in Colorado is seeking a mechanically skilled Railcar Repair Technician (Carman) to inspect, maintain, and repair freight railcars. This is a hands-on role for someone who enjoys mechanical work, troubleshooting equipment, welding, and working in an industrial environment.

Previous railroad experience is preferred but not required. We value dependability, safety, and a strong work ethic, with opportunities for growth and advancement within a veteran-friendly, PPE-provided

Qualifications

  • Mechanical background with welding experience preferred.
  • Railcar repair or railroad mechanical experience preferred but not required.
  • Experience with basic hand and power tools.
  • Ability to troubleshoot mechanical systems.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect freight railcars for damage, wear, and defects.
  • Determine repairs within authorized scope.
  • Complete mechanical railcar repairs per customer and AAR requirements.
  • Perform welding, cutting, grinding, fabrication, and replacements.
  • Use hand and power tools and repair equipment.
  • Safely operate tractors, ATVs, and site equipment.
  • Inspect completed work for safety and quality.
  • Maintain tools and work areas.
  • Follow safety procedures.

Road & Rail Services is seeking a mechanically skilled Railcar Repair Technician (Carman) to inspect, maintain, and repair freight railcars. This is a hands‑on position for someone who enjoys mechanical work, troubleshooting equipment, welding, and working in an industrial environment.

Previous railroad experience is preferred but not required. Candidates with transferable experience in welding, fabrication, industrial maintenance, heavy equipment repair, diesel mechanics, automotive repair, manufacturing maintenance, or other mechanical trades are encouraged to apply.

You should be comfortable using tools, performing physical work, and working outdoors throughout your shift. Above all, we're looking for someone who is dependable and understands that safety and quality come first.

What You'll Do

As a Railcar Repair Technician, your daily responsibilities may include:

Inspect freight railcars for damage, wear, fatigue, and mechanical defects

Determine necessary repairs within the company’s authorized scope of work

Complete mechanical railcar repairs according to customer and applicable AAR requirements

Perform welding, cutting, grinding, fabrication, and component replacement as assigned

Use hand tools, power tools, pry bars, pipe wrenches, ratchets, and other repair equipment

Safely operate equipment such as tractors, all‑terrain vehicles, and other site equipment

Inspect completed work to ensure repairs meet safety and quality expectations

Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas

Follow all company, customer, and railroad safety procedures

What We're Looking For

Qualified candidates should have:

A strong mechanical background

Welding experience is highly preferred

Previous railcar repair or railroad mechanical experience is preferred, but not required

Experience safely using basic hand and power tools

Mechanical troubleshooting and problem‑solving ability

Dependable attendance and a strong work ethic

Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Commitment to following established safety procedures

Physical & Work Environment Requirements

This is an active, outdoor industrial position. Candidates must be prepared to work in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, dust, and noisy environments.

The position requires frequent walking, bending, twisting, squatting, reaching, and other physical movements throughout the shift. Employees may be required to open railcar end doors requiring approximately 90 pounds of pulling force and 68 pounds of pushing force.

You must also be able to climb various types of ladders and work at heights greater than 16 feet when required.

Pay & Benefits

Pay: $23.00–$25.00 per hour, based on experience and qualifications.
