Job summary

Norfolk Southern Corporation (NYSE: NSC) invites applications for a physically demanding Line Maintenance role in Atlanta. You will perform track construction, repair, and demolition tasks with hand tools and light equipment as a member of a local crew.

This position requires stamina, safety diligence, and the ability to travel to multiple job sites, including overnight stays. You will progressively handle track materials, install crossties, and work with rail and ballast.

Qualifications

• Must have either a High School Diploma or GED.
• Must be 18 years of age or older.
• Must have a valid Driver’s License.
• Capable of lifting and carrying a minimum of 75 pounds.
• Willing and able to travel to various job sites, including overnight stays.
• Capable of working in inclement weather and/or conditions.
• Capable of covering distances afoot up to five miles per day on railroad right of way.

Responsibilities

• Carry and place track materials using hand tools.
• Attach the rail to ties using spike mauls or spike drivers.
• Remove spikes with claw bars and spike lifters.
• Lift, position, and install railroad crossties along the track.
• Connect and disconnect rail using track and power tools.
• Move, clean, and tamp ballast along the track area.
• Raise tracks, turnouts, and rails with jacks.
• Cut materials with drills and saws as needed.
• Drill holes with various drill motors.
• Collaborate with heavy equipment operators during material movements.
• Attend safety meetings and wear required PPE.
