Job summary

Norfolk Southern in Charlottesville, VA invites applicants for the 2026 Electrical Apprentice Signal Trainee program. This field-based role trains you in installing, inspecting, and maintaining critical signal systems for safe rail operations.

Training lasts about 52 weeks with classroom in McDonough, GA and field rotations across districts. Successful candidates join a seniority-based union, bid for positions, and may relocate.

Qualifications

• Must be 18+ with a high school diploma or GED.
• Must obtain a Class A CDL within 90 days of hire (training provided).
• Must pass FRA drug/alcohol screening and medical certification.
• Must be legally authorized to work in the U.S.
• Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.

Responsibilities

• Perform FRA-required inspections and testing of signal systems and grade crossings.
• Install, maintain, and repair signal equipment including lights, switch machines, and locks.
• Read and interpret electrical schematics and diagrams.
• Operate testing tools and hand/electrical equipment safely.
• Document inspections and repairs accurately.
• Respond to on-call assignments, including nights and weekends.
