Description

The Radiology Supervisor is responsible for supporting the daily operations of the Radiology Department and assisting the Director of Medical Imaging with staff oversight, workflow coordination, quality assurance, regulatory compliance, patient care standards, and department efficiency.

Job Details

This position serves as a working supervisor and provides leadership, guidance, and support to Radiologic Technologists and other imaging staff while continuing to perform imaging exams as needed. The Radiology Supervisor helps ensure that imaging services are delivered safely, efficiently, professionally, and in accordance with hospital policies, accreditation standards, and regulatory requirements.

Position Function And Duties
Leadership and Staff Supervision
  • Provides day-to-day supervision and support to Radiology staff.
  • Assists with staffing assignments, daily workflow, schedule coverage, and department priorities.
  • Serves as a resource for technologists regarding imaging protocols, patient care, equipment issues, and workflow concerns.
  • Promotes teamwork, professionalism, accountability, and effective communication within the department.
  • Assists with onboarding, orientation, training, and competency validation of new and existing staff.
  • Provides input to the Director regarding staff performance, education needs, and process improvement opportunities.
  • Helps address staff concerns and escalates issues to the Director when appropriate.
  • Supports the Director in maintaining a safe, efficient, and high-quality Radiology Department.
  • Leads by example through professionalism, dependability, and teamwork.
  • Promotes accountability while maintaining a supportive work environment.
  • Ensures patients receive timely, compassionate, and appropriate imaging services.
  • Helps improve department workflows, staff communication, imaging quality, and overall patient experience.
Clinical And Technical Responsibilities
  • Performs diagnostic imaging exams within the scope of licensure and certification.
  • Ensures exams are completed according to physician orders, department protocols, and safety standards.
  • Reviews imaging studies for quality, completeness, proper labeling, and appropriate documentation.
  • Assists with maintaining consistent imaging protocols and best practices across the department.
  • Supports technologists with difficult exams, patient positioning, order clarification, and workflow barriers.
  • Ensures proper use of PACS, EMR, imaging equipment, and related technology.
  • Has strong clinical and technical imaging skills.
  • Leads staff in a fair, professional, and supportive manner.
  • Possesses excellent communication and problem‑solving skills.
  • Prioritizes competing demands in a busy clinical environment.
  • Displays strong attention to detail and commitment to imaging quality.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of radiation safety and regulatory requirements.

Quality, Safety, And Compliance
  • Assists with quality assurance activities, including image review, repeat/reject analysis, documentation audits, and equipment QC.
  • Supports compliance with hospital policies, state regulations, CMS, ACR, MQSA, ARRT, and other applicable standards.
  • Promotes radiation safety practices for patients, staff, and providers.
  • Ensures appropriate use of shielding, dose reduction techniques, patient identification, contrast safety, and exam verification.
  • Assists with incident follow‑up, safety reporting, and corrective action planning as needed.
  • Helps maintain readiness for inspections, surveys, and accreditation reviews.
Department Operations
  • Assists the Director with daily operational needs of the Radiology Department.
  • Helps coordinate patient flow and exam prioritization, including STAT, inpatient, ED, and outpatient imaging needs.
  • Collaborates with scheduling, registration, nursing, providers, PATH/authorization teams, and other departments to resolve issues.
  • Assists with maintaining supply levels, equipment readiness, and department organization.
  • Helps identify workflow issues and recommend process improvements.
  • Participates in department meetings, staff education, and communication of policy or process changes.
  • Provides coverage support during staffing shortages, callouts, high‑volume periods, or urgent needs.
Communication And Customer Service
  • Communicates professionally with patients, families, providers, staff, vendors, and outside organizations.
  • Helps resolve patient, provider, and staff concerns in a timely and respectful manner.
  • Supports a positive patient experience by promoting compassion, privacy, safety, and clear communication.
  • Serves as a liaison between frontline staff and department leadership.
  • Maintains confidentiality and always follows HIPAA requirements.
Organizational Expectations
  • Attendance: Attendance is an essential job function; employee comes to work daily, on time, and completes scheduled shift.

  • Minimal physical effort required with occasional light lifting to a maximum of 25 pounds; stooping; pick, pinch, type, or otherwise work primarily with fingers.
  • Ability to effectively manage considerable mental stress.

Qualifications
  • Education: Graduate of an accredited Radiologic Technology program.
  • Job License & Certification:
    • BLS Required
    • Current ARRT certification in Radiography and CT: ARRT R.T.(R)(CT), required.
    • Current applicable state license, required.
