Job summary

Sargent & Lundy is seeking a student-intern or co-op in Nuclear Engineering to work on radiological analyses and shielding calculations for upgrades to existing nuclear power plants in the Chicago area.

You will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team, applying coursework in radiological analysis, MS Office skills, and effective communication. Opportunities to learn MCNP, RADTRAD, and other tools are available in a dynamic engineering environment.

Qualifications

  • - Active enrollment in a BS/MS in Nuclear Engineering with coursework in radiological analysis.
  • - Proficiency with MS Office applications.
  • - Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Designs and engineering upgrades/modifications to existing nuclear power plants.
  • Performs radiological dose calculations, shielding design calculations, and radiation source term calculations.
  • Collaborates with senior engineers to apply academic knowledge to real projects.
  • Uses data and modern tools to automate calculations and document design decisions.

Responsibilities

This position has a target start date of summer 2027.

We offer you a variety of interesting and challenging opportunities in Radiological/Nuclear engineering.

You will work with a multi-discipline engineering project team engaged in the design and engineering of upgrades and modifications to existing nuclear power plants in the following areas:

  • Radiological dose calculations
  • Shielding design calculations
  • Radiation source term calculations

Working under the direction of senior engineers, this position will offer you the opportunity to utilize and expand your academic background in Radiological/Nuclear Engineering.

Qualifications

Essential skills and experience:

  • This position requires active enrollment in a BS/MS in Nuclear Engineering with a strong academic background and coursework in radiological analysis
  • Proficiency with MS Office applications
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Valued but not required skills and experience:

  • Enrollment in an ABET Engineering Accreditation Commission-approved program
  • Prior, related internship or co-op experience
  • Experience with some of the following programs:
    • MCNP
    • RADTRAD
    • MicroShield
    • ORIGEN
    • ARCON96

  • You are expected to take engineering problems from issue to solution using data and modern tools such as automation and AI to improve workflows, reduce rework, and deliver cost-effective designs.
  • Many engineers in these roles build or use automation to create calculations, summarize technical documents, or draft design documentation, including appropriate use of agentic AI tools, with strong engineering judgment and verification of results.
  • Programming or scripting (e.g., Python, MATLAB, advanced Excel) to automate calculations, design checks, reporting, or data transformation is valued but not required.
  • We also value additional learning, such as a minor, certificate, or other training in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Software Engineering, or related fields that helps you apply automation or agentic AI to real engineering problems.
