Description

HOURLY RATE: $40.69

Distinguishing features of the class: The work involves the operation of radiographic equipment to acquire imaging for diagnostic purposes at Erie County Medical Center Corporation (ECMCC). The incumbent utilizes the Picture Archive Communication System (PACS), Hospital Information System (HIS) and Radiology Information System (RIS) to distribute images and reports. This is technical work involving the operation of and administration of ionizing radiation to patients for the purpose of obtaining diagnostic quality imaging. Work is performed under the general supervision of a licensed physician and the general oversight of the Radiation Safety Officer. Verifies and follows referring providers’ orders while remaining in compliance with ECMCC Imaging Department policies. Supervision is exercised over radiologic students, students with affiliation agreements and volunteers. Does related work as required.

Typical Work Activities

• Schedules radiographic examinations
• Ensures proper identification of patients using two (2) patient identifications
• Prepares and cleans the exam area before and after each patient
• Transfers patients to and from tables using assistive devices (Hoyer, Sit to stand, hover mat and slide boards)
• Prepares and positions patients for radiography
• Selects and sets up exposure factors of imaging equipment
• Administers ionizing radiation to obtain quality imaging for diagnostic purposes
• Identifies and reports to supervisor any concerns involving equipment or environment
• Obtains accurate and quality clinical information to ensure proper billing of procedure
• Observes and records patients’ condition and reports significant information to physician or nurse
• Trains technologists and students
• Ensures the radiation safety of everyone associated with the study by practicing ALARA (as low as reasonably achievable) radiation doses
• Attends in-service and other training courses to remain current in the field
• Requisitions and stores supplies and materials
• Transports patients to and from imaging areas when necessaryAssists physicians when necessary
• May perform quality assurance of equipment and lead integrity
• May participate in departmental and/or hospital committees

Full Performance Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Personal Characteristics

Good knowledge of radiographic techniques and positioning; good knowledge of ALARA (Code of Federal Regulations, 10 CFR 20.1003) and guidelines of a licensed Radiologic Technologist; good knowledge of radiographic procedures including G.I. fluoroscope; good knowledge of accepted professional ethics; good knowledge of sterile techniques; good knowledge of the mission of both ECMCC and Imaging Department; skilled in the operation of radiation producing equipment; ability to carry out complex oral and written instructions; ability to effectively troubleshoot issues that arise within the department and deal with accordingly; ability to transport and transfer patients using various forms of equipment; ability to get along well with patients and co‑workers; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a diverse constituency; good judgment; capable of performing the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.

Minimum Qualifications

• Graduation from an approved school of Radiologic Technology

Special Requirements

Possession of a license and current registration as a Radiologic Technologist as issued by the New York State Department of Health at time of appointment and maintenance throughout duration of appointment; or:

• Possession of a Temporary Permit as a Radiologic Technologist as issued by the New York State Department of Health at time of appointment and licensure and registration before completion of the probationary period; and
• Possession of an American Registry of Radiologic Technologist (ARRT) Certification at the time of completion of the probationary period and maintenance throughout duration of appointment.
• Possession of Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification within sixty (60) days of appointment and maintenance throughout duration of employment.

NOTE: Verifiable part‑time and/or volunteer experience will be pro‑rated toward meeting full‑time experience requirements.
