Overview

Radiologic Technologist - Float Pool (West Branch) at MyMichigan Health. This position is an integral part of the Orthopedic Surgery team and requires the ability to work effectively with Providers and ancillary staff to deliver high quality, compassionate patient care. Under the direct supervision of the provider, the radiographer will be responsible for providing quality x-rays to allow for accurate radiologic diagnosis with the least amount of radiation exposure to the patient. This position also functions as a member of the clinical team thereby conducting patient assessments, procedures, and education in the Orthopedic Surgery/occupational health setting. This position must have basic knowledge of specialty and/or primary care symptom management to be able to assess, plan, and deliver timely and appropriate care, especially in emergent situations.

This position requires the ability to provide high quality, compassionate patient care in a fast paced environment. This position requires compliance with all the policies/procedures of MyMichigan Health, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) guidelines, Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) regulations, and all appropriate regulatory agencies. The radiographer may be required to participate in the training of new employees, students and float staff. May also perform general office duties (keyboard, filing, telephone, computer and office equipment) as required by the practice. The expectations outlined in this job description may vary slightly depending on the practice in which you are assigned.

Responsibilities

• 25% Performs radiographic procedures utilizing accurate application of ionizing radiation for radiologic diagnosis, by adjusting technical factors to provide appropriate exposures. Compliance with MyMichigan Health radiology protocols is required.
• 25% Positions patient and equipment appropriately to accurately demonstrate the area being examined, requiring extensive anatomic positioning skills. Appropriately adjusts equipment to produce quality film with minimal exposure. Provides appropriate radiation protection for the patient and staff during radiation exposures according to prescribed safety standards. Informs patient of x-ray procedures.
• 25% Greets patients and/or family, takes vital signs, obtains/reviews medical, social, surgical and medication history, and allergy information. Prepares patient for examination, performs procedures (in office labs: urinalysis, pregnancy testing, strep screens; EKG’s, TB testing, etc.) and reports results to providers. Communicates information regarding testing, procedures and follow up care to patient in a clear, concise and professional manner.
• 10% Accurately documents all patient information in the medical record according to current guidelines.
• 10% Assists provider with examinations and procedures.
• 5% Prepares and cleans the patient area, sets up equipment, cleans and facilitates room set up after a procedure. Disposes of contaminated supplies and sterilizes medical instruments.

Other Duties And Responsibilities

• Cleans and disinfects x-ray room and equipment after each patient use.
• Provides a complete patient assessment, as indicated within the scope of the practice.
• Based on the practice, may be required to demonstrate competency to assist with procedures such as venipuncture, OCL splinting, electrocardiogram (EKG), Pulmonary Function Test (PFT), audiometry, vision testing, dressing changes, respirator fit testing, drug and alcohol testing.
• Respirator Fit testing requires the ability to learn and maintain knowledge of various mask types and proper mask fitting according to OSHA regulations.
• Ensures compliance with company protocols, organizational departmental policies and protocols, and local (MIOSHA), and federal (CLIA/JC/FMCSA) guidelines.
• Performs Autoclave procedure according to policy.
• Maintains a stocked, clean, sterile and safe environment. If applicable, may be required to travel to satellite clinics.
• Demonstrates critical thinking for patient management.
• Maintains a high level of confidentiality and ensures patient’s rights in accordance with proper procedures and in compliance with HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability Accountability Act).
• May be asked to perform clerical duties - filling out insurance forms, correspondence, arranging hospital admission, answering the telephone, updating/filing patient’s medical records. Orders supplies and medications.
• Participate as needed in continuous quality improvement projects and activities. This includes daily, weekly, monthly checks of equipment, supplies and medications. In addition, staff may be asked to participate in organizational performance improvement projects.
• This position may be required to order all medical, pharmacy supplies, and office supplies to manage patient care.
• Ensures all Electronic Medical Record (EMR) Tasks are completed in a timely manner.

Certifications and Licensures

• ARRT - Reg Radiologic Technologist – Required: Registered by American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) or Registry eligible within 6 months of hire. Knowledge of radiologic technology as normally acquired through completion of an AMA approved radiologic technology program.
• BLS - Basic Life Support – Required: Within 3 months of hire or transfer.

Education and Experience

• Education: Associates Degree. AART registry eligible. One year clinical experience as normally acquired through AMA approved school of radiologic technology.
• Experience, Training And Skills: One year clinical experience as normally acquired through AMA approved school of radiologic technology. Previous experience in an Orthopedic Surgery or occupational health setting and/or medical practice preferred. Knowledge of care and use of special procedure equipment to aid Provider in an efficient manner. Minimum of one year experience as staff Radiologic Technologist in hospital setting preferred. Excellent interpersonal skills. Computer skills, including basic knowledge of EMR systems and Microsoft Office software.

Physical/Mental Requirements And Typical Working Conditions

• Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public contact, trauma, grief and death. Wear personal protective equipment as required.
• Move about facility with or without assistive devices and perform the functions of the job as outlined.
• Overall vision and hearing is necessary with or without assistive devices. Frequently sit/stand/walk for long periods. May require postural changes (stooping, kneeling, crouching).
• Some exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material. Follow MyMichigan Health bloodborne pathogen and TB testing as required.
• Ability to handle multiple tasks, work independently, maintain regular attendance and stay awake. Dexterity for handling, reaching, grasping, fingering and feeling. Physical Demand Level: Light. Ability to lift/carry 11-20 lbs occasionally, 10 lbs frequently, and walk/stand/push/pull as needed.
