Job description

DMC Sinai-Grace Hospital is DMC’s largest hospital, offering a comprehensive heart center, cancer care, gerontology, emergency medicine, obstetrics/gynecology and cosmetic services. Sinai-Grace’s joint replacement program features a revolutionary minimally invasive knee and hip replacement surgery that attracts patients from all over the country. Sinai-Grace operates more than 21 outpatient care sites and ambulatory surgery centers throughout Wayne and Oakland Counties and is one of 10 hospitals in the nation to be awarded a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation grant to help set the standards of cardiac care for hospitals and physicians throughout the nation.

Summary Description

Under general supervision and following established policies and procedures, the imaging technician performs diagnostic radiological exams using appropriate imaging equipment. The technician verifies patient identity and reviews the patient’s medical record for appropriateness of exam or procedure. Patient interviews are conducted to obtain, verify, or update medical history and assess risk factors such as medications, pregnancy, and/or psychological indicators. The technician explains the procedure to the patient, including side effects of pharmaceuticals administered, risks, benefits, alternatives, and follow‑up. Equipment is set up and appropriate images are acquired as per script. Images are reviewed, initial observations are made, exceptions from established protocols are documented, and data is communicated to the radiologist. Medical emergencies are recognized and responded to as appropriate. Physician‑prescribed post‑care instructions are provided to patients. The technician participates in process improvement activities within the radiology practice, including quality of care, patient flow, reject‑repeat analysis, and patient satisfaction. Imaging education is provided to residents, student technologists, and new employees. Call/standby may be required by the department.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
  • Registered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologist (ARRT) in Radiography (R).
  • Required to have or successfully complete American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support – Healthcare Provider (BLS) training by the end of the orientation period.
Skills Required
  • Analytical and clinical skills necessary to determine the most age‑appropriate method of providing requested radiographs specific to the patient’s physical ability and/or limitations.
  • Interpersonal and communication skills necessary to effectively deal with and instruct patients who may be under physical or emotional stress; ability to comprehend and follow physicians’ verbal and written requests and prescriptions; ability to work effectively in a culturally diverse atmosphere with a variety of hospital personnel and/or patients.
  • Technical knowledge required to operate equipment including all specialized equipment and computers.
  • Ability to work productively and effectively within a complex environment and handle multiple or changing priorities.
  • Physical stamina for frequent walking, standing, lifting and positioning of patients. Physical ability to stand, bend, push, pull, reach, and lift in order to provide patient care.
  • Manual dexterity and visual acuity to operate and utilize all types of X‑ray equipment and supplies in order to produce radiographs of acceptable diagnostic quality.
