Job summary

City of Garland seeks an experienced technician to install, repair, and maintain electronic and radio equipment for city vehicles and the radio infrastructure. You will mentor technicians, manage inventories, and maintain radio databases for public safety systems in Garland.

The role covers overseeing Motorola systems, coordinating infrastructure projects, and providing on-call support. A two-year degree with related experience is required; additional radio training is preferred.

Qualifications

  • Requires two-year degree or equivalent with two years related experience.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience acceptable.
  • Preferred: four-year degree and formal radio training.

Responsibilities

  • Installations and repairs of electronic and radio equipment.
  • Lead installation technicians on projects.
  • Maintain inventory and radio databases.
  • Support and maintain public safety radio system.
  • Maintain mobiles, portables, base stations, and microwave systems.
  • Coordinate infrastructure projects and siren networks.
  • Attend industry seminars and document maintenance schedules.
  • On-call support after hours and holidays.
  • Prepare written documents for City Administration.

Job description

Summary

Responsible for performing the installation and maintenance of all electronic and specialty equipment installed in city vehicles and the City of Garland radio communication infrastructure.

Pay Range:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Perform various installations and repairs as needed.
  • Mentor and lead installation technicians on both installations and repairs.
  • Maintains an accurate inventory of all system components
  • Maintains radio databases and subscriber fleet inventories
  • Maintains public safety radio system
  • Maintains and repairs mobiles, portables and fixed base stations
  • Maintains Point-to-Point Microwave systems
  • Keeps informed of industry standards and trends and attends seminars, conferences and professional organization meetings
  • Documents and maintain records of preventative maintenance schedules
  • Maintains ongoing communication with all radio stakeholders
  • Coordinate various infrastructure projects
  • Manage the Storm and Flood Siren Infrastructure
  • Maintains strong relationships with the customers.
  • Maintains effective relationships with support vendors and manufacturers
  • Participate in on-call support as needed after-hours, weekends and holidays
  • Prepares written documents for City Administration as requested by manager
Minimum Qualifications
  • Two-year college degree, formal technical training or a combination of college and training
  • Two years related experience

Or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.

Preferred Qualificati ons

Education/ Experience:

  • Four-year college degree
  • Formal training in radio communication systems
  • More than four years of experience in radio programming, installation, repair and electrical theory
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Considerable knowledge of 12-volt electronics and usage
  • Skill in advising a team of employees
  • Skill in understanding and analyzing prevalent issues
  • Working knowledge of Motorola 700/800MHz Simulcast radio systems
  • Working knowledge of Motorola Dispatch consoles networks
  • Working knowledge of Motorola subscriber programming software
  • Knowledge of VHF, UHF, 700MHz, 800MHz, 6GHz and 11GHzfrequencies
  • Knowledge of FCC rules and regulations
  • Knowledge of various radio communication systems
  • Skill in effective communication
  • Skill in basic computer operations
  • Basic networking skills
  • Ability to perform several tasks as assigned
Licenses and Certifications
  • Valid class C Texas driver's license

The incumbent works in a typical office environment; occasional exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and/or hazards. The position requires that the employee be able to lift 50 pounds, work in close / cramped areas, work in dusty conditions, work in low-light conditions and be able to sit, stand, kneel, crouch and bend for brief periods of time. The position requires that the employee be able to work while standing on a ladder or other appropriate device to elevate the employee to the level of the work. The employee must be able to use fingers to feel and have sufficient dexterity to sort and hold small wires and install small connectors into sockets. The employee must be able to discern a broad spectrum of colors used in network cable. The position requires occasional outside work and the ability to work on-call as needed for urgent issues.
