Job summary

Beth Israel Lahey Health in Massachusetts is seeking a Radiation Therapist to ensure quality patient care and uphold safety standards. The position administers ionizing radiation therapy per prescription and maintains patient comfort and consent checks.

Qualified candidates will have graduated from an accredited Radiation Therapy Program; ARRT eligibility with MA license within 12 months; and may have up to six months experience in Radiation Oncology. Vaccination against influenza is required.

• Trained in equipment maintenance; general understanding of Physics, Anatomy and Physiology; excellent communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Inform patient of responsibility for administering ionizing radiation therapy per prescription.
• Check informed consent and patient identification (verbal and photo).
• Verify calculations prior to treatment and ensure accurate positioning and comfort.
• Deliver treatment per center protocols with minimal supervision.
• Prepare treatment room and transfer patient safely to treatment couch.
• Maintain skin marking and tattoo techniques as needed.
• Monitor safety, observe reactions, and report to Radiation Oncologist or Nurse.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Education Required: Must be a graduate of an accredited Radiation Therapy Program
• Experience Preferred: Six months Radiation Oncology Therapy experience or equivalent clinical experience obtained through completion of a Radiation Therapy Program
• Other Skills/Knowledge Required: Trained in equipment maintenance General understanding of Physics, Anatomy and Physiology Excellent communication skills

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS, CERTIFICATIONS

• Required: Registry eligible for ARRT. Must obtain ARRT certification within 12 months of hire.
• Must be at a minimum Temporarily Licensed by the State of Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MA DPH) and obtain a permanent License within 12 months of hire

JOB FUNCTIONS

• The Technologist should inform the patient that s/he will be responsible for administering ionizing radiation therapy according to prescription and instruction of the radiation oncologist.
• Check that informed consent has been completed.
• Check patient identification verbally as well as picture form.
• Check calculations prior to treatment including IMPAC.
• Accurate positioning and patient comfort.
• Therapist should maintain visual and verbal contact with the patient.
• Therapist is responsible for delivering treatment in accordance with center’s protocols.
• Accurately delivers the prescribed course of radiation therapy with minimal supervision after checking patient chart for daily dose, prescription, diagnosis and consent.
• Prepares treatment room for each patient as prescribed; transfer patient safely to treatment couch.
• Maintains skin marking as necessary.
• Knowledgeable in the tattoo techniques.
• Observes patient for unusual reactions and events and reports occurrence to Radiation Oncologist or Nurse: assist in emergency treatment as needed.
• Monitors radiation safety measures for patients and personnel.
• Assist in daily quality assurance checks on treatment equipment: immediately reports erratic machine operation to Chief Therapist.
• Assist in tumor localization and the preparation of immobilization devices: assists in dosimetry procedures.
• May assist physics in block making and calibration.
• Knowledgeable in use of multi-leaf collimator.
• Maintains orderliness and efficiency of work area.
• Maintains department records correctly: records daily treatment chart accurately as prescribed.
• Performs patient quality assurance routinely.
• Keeps treatment and simulation rooms supplied with inventory as needed.
• Present him/herself in a professional manner and dress at all times in the work place.
• Assist in orientation of new employees.
• Provides technical direction, guidance and explanation to others.

Pay Range

• Pay Range: $47.00 - $63.26 The pay range listed for this position is the base hourly wage range the organization reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position at this time.
• Actual compensation is determined based on several factors, that may include seniority, education, training, relevant experience, relevant certifications, geography of work location, job responsibilities, or other applicable factors permissible by law.
• Compensation may exceed the base hourly rate depending on shift differentials, call pay, premium pay, overtime pay, and other additional pay practices, as applicable to the position and in accordance with the law.
