Job summary

AdventHealth in Goldsboro, NC seeks a Radiation Therapist to evaluate imaging, verify treatment plans, and perform QA. You will ensure accurate delivery, maintain records, and support students in a fast-paced oncology department.

Requirements include an accredited Radiation Therapy program, ARRT RT(T), BLS, and 1+ year experience. This is a full-time, day-shift role.

Qualifications

• Fluent in English; able to comprehend written and verbal instructions.
• Proficient in EHR and record-and-verify systems.
• Knowledge of anatomy for localization and treatment planning.
• Technical skills to implement treatment plans proposed by Radiation Oncologists.
• Ability to learn Radiation Therapy software packages.
• Adaptable to department policies and procedures.
• Understanding of ALARA principles for patient and staff safety.
• Experience with Linear Accelerator, TPS, and patient scheduling systems.
• Strong clerical skills for record keeping.
• Knowledge of radiobiology and dose planning.

Responsibilities

• Evaluate prescribed imaging and document changes within 24 hours.
• Verify treatment parameters and patient positioning before delivery.
• Perform QA on treatment unit and address malfunctions.
• Support student education and departmental supplies.
• Participate in after-hours on-call coverage as needed.
• Verify physician’s prescription and daily treatment parameters.
• Identify treatment volumes and ensure consistent patient positioning.
• Communicate with patients and resolve issues with supervisors as needed.
• Observe patient reactions to treatment and adapt care accordingly.
• Perform CT simulation including contrast administration under physician direction.

Job Description:

• Evaluates prescribed imaging and makes requested changes within 24 hours, accurately documenting treatment information in the patient electronic record and utilizing the record and verify system.
• Reviews all new starts for consistency prior to treatment, verifying patient positioning and field orientation, and checking the record and verify system for prescription, treatment parameters, doses, treatment accessories, and monitor units.
• Performs morning Quality Assurance (QA) on the treatment unit, assessing whether all equipment is operating according to physics policy and calling the appropriate person immediately after equipment malfunctions.
• Assists in maintaining department supplies and provides supervised education experiences for students that fulfill curriculum requirements of the academic institution.
• As required by facility, participates in after hours on-call coverage, maintains competency with afterhours treatment coverage, performs 2D treatment calculations, and works with minimal direction and supervision.
• Verifies the physician’s prescription and treatment parameters daily to ensure accurate treatment of the patient in accordance with the prescription and treatment plan.
• Identifies the treatment volume and positions the patient in a consistent and reproducible manner.
• Assesses patients’ needs and actively seeks to resolve any potential problems or conflicts, consulting with the chief therapist/supervisor as necessary.
• Treats patients in a timely and courteous manner, handling stressful situations appropriately and communicating effectively with patients of all ages.
• Clinically observes patient reactions to treatment and assists in accommodating the patient through the treatment process.
• Performs all aspects of CT Simulation, including administering contrast agents during simulation localization under the direction of a physician or non-physician practitioner.
• Immediately reports and documents adverse reactions to the managing physician and site leaders.

• Understanding of Basic Radiation Safety concepts to keep explore levels ALARA for patients and staff [Required]
• Proficient in the use of Linear Accelerator, Treatment Planning Simulator, and patient tracking and scheduling systems [Required]
• Excellent clerical skills for record keeping [Required]
• Knowledge of radiobiology, doses to critical structures, and lymphatics for spread of disease [Required]
• Effective communication skills and ability to handle delicate or stressful issues with tact [Required]
• Familiarity with a range of medical devices and systems including patient dose monitors, portal imaging systems, and patient immobilization devices [Required]
• Fluent in the English language and able to comprehend both written and verbal instructions [Required]
• Organizational, interpersonal, and customer relations skills [Required]
• Competence in grammar, spelling, keyboarding, and computer usage [Required]

Education:

Associate's [Required], Bachelor’s [Preferred]. Field of Study: Completion of an accredited Radiation Therapy program [Required]

Work Experience:

1+ year of experience as a radiation therapist [Preferred]
