Job summary

Charles River Laboratories is seeking an experienced EHSS professional to establish and manage comprehensive safety, health and environmental programs across the site. The role includes regulatory compliance, incident response coordination and training, with emphasis on NRC/DOT/DOT regulations and radiation safety oversight.

The successful candidate will hold a Radiation Safety Officer certification, possess a Bachelor’s in EH&S or related field, and be able to work flexible hours to support

Qualifications

• Radiation Safety Officer certification.
• 5+ years of EHSS experience, preferably in lab or scientific setting.
• Ability to interpret federal/state regulations and manage priorities.

Responsibilities

• Establish, administer and update EHSS programs for compliance with OSHA, EPA, DOT, NRC and other programs.
• Manage radioactive isotope inventory and licensing documents.
• Coordinate radioactive waste disposal and conduct leak tests.
• Provide training on handling radioactive materials and conduct refresher training.
• Assist in emergency response and serve as EHSS Emergency Coordinator.
• Chair Safety Committee and advise on EHSS regulatory issues.
• Perform site audits and ensure corrective actions are communicated.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Establish, administer and update specific EHSS programs for compliance with state andfederal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Environmental ProtectionAgency (EPA), Department of Transportation (DOT), Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC),and other regulatory programs as necessary.
  • Managing radioactive isotope inventory, maintaining documents relating to thelicense.
  • Maintaining documentation that demonstrates that the dose to individual membersof the public does not exceed the NRC limit.
  • Ensuring that licensed material is transported in accordance with applicable NRC andDOT requirements.
  • Completing all activities involving radioactive material, including monitoring andsurveying of all areas where radioactive material is used.
  • Acting as liaison with NRC and other regulatory authorities.
  • Distributing and collecting personnel monitoring devices, evaluating bioassays,monitoring exposures and recommending appropriate remedial actions.
  • Conducting training programs and otherwise instructing personnel in the properprocedures for handling radioactive materials prior to use, at periodic intervals(refresher training), and as required by changes in procedures, equipment,regulations, etc.
  • Coordinating the radioactive waste disposal program, including effluent monitoringand recordkeeping on waste storage and disposal records.
  • Performing leak tests on all sealed sources and calibration of radiation surveyinstruments.
  • Holding periodic meetings with, and provide reports to, site management, inconjunction with the Radiation Safety Committee.
  • Ensuring that all users are properly trained.
  • Performing periodic audits, in conjunction with the Radiation Safety Committee, ofthe radiation safety program, and ensuring corrective actions are communicated toall personnel who use licensed materials.
• Assist management team in emergency response and function as EHSS EmergencyCoordinator for 24-hour incident response; assist in the investigation of injuries resulting inlost time claims and/or safety violations and property damage; make recommendations forcorrective action.
• Serve as Chairperson of Safety Committee(s); provide regulatory guidance on EHSS issues tostaff.
• May request and maintain necessary facility permits, licenses and compliance reportsfrom/for federal, local and state regulatory authorities; may obtain necessary licenses tofunction as Radiation Safety Officer.
• Perform all other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education/Experience:

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Environmental Health and Safety, Environmental Engineering, or a related discipline, with 5 or more years related experience in EHSS, preferably in a laboratory or scientific organization.
• An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactorysubstitute for the specific education and experience listed above.

Certification/Licensure: Radiation Safety Officer certification

Other:

• Demonstrated ability to interpret/apply required federal or state regulations and managemultiple/changing priorities with many interruptions.
• Excellent communication skills both verbal and written, project management skills, strongtime management skills, and strong organizational skills are required.
• Basic familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite.
• Computer skills, commensurate with Essential Functions, including the ability to learn avalidated system.
• Ability to work extended hours beyond normal work schedule to include, but not limited toevenings, weekends, extended shifts, and/or extra shifts, sometimes on short notice.
• Ability to work under specific time constraints.
