With a track record of global leadership in bone marrow transplantation, HIV/AIDS prevention, immunotherapy and COVID-19 vaccines, Fred Hutch has earned a reputation as one of the world’s leading cancer, infectious disease and biomedical research centers. Fred Hutch operates eight clinical care sites that provide medical oncology, infusion, radiation, proton therapy and related services, and network affiliations with hospitals in five states. Together, our fully integrated research and clinical care teams seek to discover new cures to the world’s deadliest diseases and make life beyond cancer a reality.

At Fred Hutch we value collaboration, compassion, determination, excellence, innovation, integrity and respect. Our mission is directly tied to the humanity, dignity and inherent value of each employee, patient, community member and supporter. Our commitment to learning across our differences and similarities make us stronger. We seek employees who bring different and innovative ways of seeing the world and solving problems.

At Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center, all employees are expected to demonstrate a commitment to our values of collaboration, compassion, determination, excellence, innovation, integrity, and respect.

The Fred Hutch Division of Radiation Oncology seeks qualified candidates for its two-year Mentored Faculty Physician Scientist Program in Radiation Oncology (MFPSP-RO). A successful applicant will be an MD or MD/PhD who is committed to pioneering major advances in medical practice through research. Applicants should be interested in an aspect of cancer research relevant to the Division of Radiation Oncology, including the development of therapies that modulate the response to radiation therapy. Radiation Oncology Physician Scientists Candidates will advance their academic careers by performing oncology and/or radiation biology research with access to state-of-the-art facilities and working with expert faculty members at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center and the University of Washington.

The Fred Hutch Division of Radiation Oncology has funding to support the incumbent's salary and lab expenses for two years of translational research training. The candidate's faculty mentor will provide dedicated space and may support additional laboratory and project funding beyond those available through the MFPSPRO funding. Up to 20% of the candidate's effort will be spent in clinical practice. The Physician Scientist is strongly encouraged to work with their mentor to apply for outside funding during their first year.

Responsibilities

The Physician Scientist in this Program will develop a research project under the guidance of a FH RO faculty mentor. Projects may be predominantly clinical, correlative or laboratory-based, but must be broadly focused on the development and/or improvement of cancer radiotherapy. Candidates may identify projects that require guidance from more than one mentor, as long as one mentor is a Physician Scientist faculty member of the Division of Radiation Oncology. Candidates may identify potential research projects and mentors as part of their application for the Physician Scientist Program. The Physician Scientist will participate in outpatient Radiation Oncology Clinic at Fred Hutch Cancer Center's South Lake Union Medical Center on the Fred Hutch campus. Clinical duties may be performed independently for board certified / board eligible candidates, who must obtain a WA State Medical License, though guidance from established Radiation Oncology Attending faculty will be provided as for all junior faculty and instructors. The background and experience of the applicant will be taken into consideration when planning their clinical activity.Candidates need to meet minimum requirements for clinical competency and credentialing, including passing a background check.
