Job summary

The University of Chicago's Radiation Safety Program seeks a Radiation Safety Specialist to support radiation and laser safety across the Medical Center. Primary duties include radioactive waste management, survey work, dosimetry tracking, instrument checks, and regulatory compliance, with supervision at the task level.

Qualifications

• A college or university degree in related field.
• HAZWOPER certification preferred (40-hour) but can be obtained during employment.
• Minimum < 2 years of related work experience.

Responsibilities

• Assist in planning, scheduling, and conducting radiation and contamination surveys.
• Perform wipe analysis and contamination assessments.
• Assist with patient therapy procedures and room setup for contamination control.
• Conduct daily package receipt surveys and inventory entry in the database.
• Support the radiation monitoring program, including dosimetry collection and tracking.
• Conduct radiation safety training for University and Medical Center staff.
• Participate in emergency response activities, including spill response and contamination control.
• Perform instrument calibration and quality control checks for radiation detection equipment.
• Perform radioactive waste management duties, including preparation, delivery, surveys, and disposal of waste containers.
• Data entry of radiation safety records daily into a database to demonstrate regulatory compliance.
