Job summary

Amentum is seeking a highly skilled Radiation Effects Scientist to join our team in the United States. You will assess and mitigate radiation impact on system performance, model interactions with components, and support test planning and verification across product lifecycles.

You will design and harden systems for dose rate, TID, NDD, and SEE, collaborate with cross‑functional teams, and participate in Radiation Review Boards. A Secret clearance and citizenship are required.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Physics, Electrical/Nuclear Engineering or related field.
  • 10+ years of radiation engineering or electronic component testing experience.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret US Government Clearance (US citizenship required).

Responsibilities

  • Support engineering decisions based on radiation effects on overall system performance.
  • Design and harden systems across multiple radiation effects (dose rate, TID, NDD, SEE).
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to ensure radiation hardening across the product lifecycle.
  • Assist in test plan development and review.
  • Review Reports and participate in Radiation Review Boards.
  • Help generate templates and guides for training materials.
  • Assist with testing efforts, test station setup, validation and verification.
  • Collaborate on program requirements and provide feedback on approach to meet requirements.

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Radiation Effects Scientist to join our team at Amentum. As a Radiation Effects Scientist, you will be responsible for assessing and mitigating the impact of radiation on system performance. This will involve analyzing environments, transporting those environments through system enclosures, modeling the interaction of radiation with components and sensors, or testing of microelectronic components. Typical components include integrated circuits, transistors, capacitors, inductors, resistors, diodes, analog circuits, and other electronic components.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Support engineering decisions based on radiation effects on overall system performance.
  • Design and harden systems across multiple radiation effects, including dose rate, total ionizing dose (TID), neutron displacement damage (NDD), and single event effects (SEE).
  • Work with interdisciplinary teams to ensure radiation hardening is maintained across the product lifecycle.
  • Assist in test plan development and review
  • Review Reports
  • Participate in Radiation Review Boards
  • Help generate templates and guides
  • Assist in developing training materials and tools for new hires
  • Assist with testing efforts, test station setup and validation and verification efforts
  • Collaborate on program requirements and provide feedback on approach to meet requirements
Required Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, or other relevant field.
  • 10+ years of Radiation Engineering, electronic component testing, or related experience.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret US Government Clearance. Please note that US Citizenship is required to obtain a Secret clearance.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Doctorate degree or PhD in Physics, Electrical Engineering, or Nuclear Engineering.
  • 10+ years of radiation engineering experience with the Department of Defense
  • Active Secret Clearance
Compensation Details:

$150,000 - $200,000 annually

The compensation range or hourly rate listed for this position is provided as a good-faith estimate of what the company intends to offer for this role at the time this posting was issued. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as job responsibilities, education, experience, skills, internal equity, market data, applicable collective bargaining agreements, and relevant laws.
