Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory is seeking Radiation Control Technicians to join the Radiation Protection Group at Berkeley, CA. The role focuses on radiological surveys, monitoring of areas and personnel, and incident response to maintain safety and compliance.

Two levels (747.1 and 747.2) involve escalating survey responsibilities and qualification requirements. The position is on-site at 1 Cyclotron Road with overtime eligibility and union representation.

Job description

The Environment, Health, & Safety (EHS) Division at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory is seeking Radiation Control Technicians to join the Radiation Protection Group (RPG). RPG provides radiation safety-related technical assistance to the Lab community, conducting radiological surveillance, managing radioactive material, supporting site characterization, and ensuring all work is performed safely and in compliance with established standards and policies.

In this role, you will play a key role in supporting radiological operations, performing surveillance and surveys of work areas, monitoring personnel and environmental conditions, and assisting with incidents and emergency responses across the Laboratory.

Key Responsibilities

At the 747.1 Level:

• Work under direct or close supervision, perform simple basic and routine radiological work tasks required to implement Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory's (LBNL) Radiation Protection Program as necessary and assigned to assure safe and compliant radiation protection as set forth in Radiation Protections Group's (RPGs) policies and procedures. Receives regular instructions on all tasks. In general, including but not limited to:
  • Perform radiological surveys (radiation, contamination, and airborne radioactive) and generate associated documents, reports and audits in support of assigned area(s);
  • Perform routine radiological surveys of laboratory, construction areas, remediation sites and other work areas as needed;
  • Perform release surveys of materials, equipment and property from areas controlled for radiological purposes to uncontrolled areas;
  • Post/label areas and items controlled for radiological purposes;
  • Respond with supervision to contaminated personnel/areas and other radiological incidents and emergencies;
  • Provide advanced radiological support during preparation, packaging, and shipment/transfer of radioactive materials.

At the 747.2 Level, in addition to the responsibilities of the Level 1 role:

• Perform complex radiological surveys (radiation, contamination, and airborne radioactive) and generate associated documents, reports and audits in support of assigned area(s);
• Evaluate radiological conditions within various types of facilities, and work locations to support the development of radiological work authorization, work plans, survey plans, etc. (technical work documents);
• Conduct and or supports assessments, audits and other measures needed regarding radiological incidents;
• Respond to contaminated personnel/areas and other radiological incidents and emergencies;
• Provide advanced radiological support during preparation, packaging, and shipment/transfer of radioactive materials;
• Provide advanced radiological support during operation related to Material Control and Accountability, and Nuclear Material Management.

Required Qualifications

At the 747.1 Level:

• Basic knowledge and skills to become proficient in basic radiation safety and radiation measurement concepts, minimal or no experience in radiological techniques and principals.
• Expected to achieve and maintain status as a DOE-qualified radiation control technician (RCT) with training.
• Two years of technical college courses, or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently given broad and general program/project directions.
• Must be able to perform physical requirements of the position including: approx. 2 hours per day sitting, approx. 4 hours per day of standing and/or walking. Some duties of this position require up to 1 hour per day of the following types of hand use: fine manipulation, keyboard/mouse use, simple and/or power grasping. Must be able to routinely lift and carry up to 40 lbs. Must be able to perform the physical aspects of radiological surveys including some routine squatting, kneeling, climbing, bending, and twisting. Swipe and meter operations require up to 2 hours per day of reaching.
• Required to achieve and maintain respirator qualification.

At the 747.2 Level, in additional to the required qualifications of the Level 1 role:

• Demonstrated understanding of principles of radiation safety (e.g. monitoring and radioisotope identification) and radiation measurement and radioisotope handling.
• Required to achieve and maintain status as a DOE-qualified radiation control technician (RCT).
• Education, or combination of education and experience, in which advanced technical concepts and principles are acquired in the field of radiation protection/health physics.
• Five years of relevant experience in radiation measurement, radioisotope handling or radiation monitoring.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently given broad and general program/project directions.
• Must be able to perform physical requirements of the position including: approx. 2 hours per day sitting, approx. 4 hours per day of standing and/or walking. Additional Information

• Appointment type: This is a full-time career appointment, non-exempt (hourly paid), eligible for overtime pay.
• Salary range: This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
• • The expected hourly range for the Radiation Control Technician Level 1 (747.1) is $35.00. - $43.00 depending upon the candidate's skills, knowledge, and abilities. This includes relevant education, certifications, and years of experience.
  • The expected hourly range for the Radiation Control Technician Level 2 (747.2) is $43.00 - $49.00, depending upon the candidate's skills, knowledge, and abilities. This includes relevant education, certifications, and years of experience.
  • Salary offers are made within the expected range for each level based on an evaluation of the candidate's skills, knowledge, abilities, relevant education, certifications and/or years of relevant experience.
