Responsibilities

• Performs Nuclear Cardiac imaging and/or Nuclear Medicine examinations.
• Performs independently, with minimal direction from the Technical and Medical Director of Radiology-administrative duties, supervisory duties and imaging duties
• Provides leadership and supervision of technical staff to ensure production of high-quality imaging
• Responsible for the department of Nuclear Medicine and adherence to all regulations (NRC, state, federal, ACR)
• Assists in administering and establishing employee policy, schedules, work assignments, evaluations, and other personnel related issues
• Adheres to all Radiation Safety requirements and maintains knowledge of requirements, medicolegal responsibilities and status governing nuclear operations, including but not limited to Alabama Department of Public Health, Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Radiation Safety Committee and Joint Commission
• Responsible for leading and maintaining Nuclear Medicine accreditation through the American College of Radiology (ACR), including coordination of accreditation activities, documentation, staff compliance, and continuous quality improvement.
• Monitors the daily patient schedule and is active in adjusting improve throughput
• Investigates problems and makes recommendations for solutions
• Performs or assists with the performance of accreditation requirements for the American College of Radiology (ACR) or Intersocietal Accreditation Commission (IAC).
• Monitors the condition, care and maintenance of equipment, reporting problems through the appropriate channels and to the Manager/Director
• Recommends and participates in performance improvement plans
• Participates in Quality Control activities as assigned
• Completes all aspects of a patient's exam, including ensuring images are available for the physician review in a timely manner, charging procedures, radioisotopes and supplies and documenting history of additional views
• Monitors timekeeping for employees and makes entries in the timekeeping system for assigned staff
• Maintains competency by demonstrating a complete working knowledge of all imaging equipment and proper positioning for exams. Adjusts immobilization devices and equipment, with physician guidance when needed, to obtain diagnostic images.
• Responsible for the procurement, preparation, quality control, calculation, identification, documentation, administration, disposal, storage, and safe handling of radiopharmaceutical and other radioactive materials.
• Performs a variety of related digital image management tasks as necessary ie exceptions, annotations
• Prepares and maintains records concerning radiopharmaceutical receiving, dispensing, and disposal activities.
• Operates radiation detection and measurement instrumentation.
• Calibrates instruments and reviews calibration data to detect trends indicating instrument malfunction.
• Calculates for correct dosage in dose calibrator, observes patient dosage for treatments under direct supervision of physician.
• Monitors department with survey meter for possible contamination.
• Uses appropriate scanning factors and protocols according to patient and body part being examined
• Performs patient assessment and screening, such as allergies, potential drug interactions, and lab requirements, within the scope of practice. Abides by and enforces all compliance requirements and policies and performs these responsibilities in an ethical manner consistent with the organization's values.
• Adheres to hospital and departmental policies including confidentiality.
• Exhibits an acceptable work ethic as evidenced by regular and prompt attendance, as well as following all timekeeping/clocking policies.
• Utilizes proper body mechanics when: Moving, positioning and transferring patients without assistance or with assistance when needed for patient safety and when moving equipment/supplies necessary to perform essential functions.
• Works assigned schedule including overtime and call as required.
• May assist with clinical training of students.
• Educates the patient and uses techniques that minimize radiation exposure to patients, public, and health personnel consistent with ALARA (as low as reasonably achievable).
• Reviews orders, checking for special instructions from physicians, and consults with physicians as needed.
• Pleasantly greets patients, confirming their identity using two identifiers and introducing oneself.
• Communicates and uses appropriate customer relation skills with patients. families, and all members of the healthcare team
• Completely explains examination procedure to the patient and family, if present.
• Maintains the necessary inventory of supplies. rotating stock in an orderly fashion and eliminating outdated items
• Maintains orderliness and cleanliness of the department
• Recognizes emergency situations and initiates code procedures as needed
• Protects patients and employee's by adhering to infection control policies and procedures
• Completes all mandatory educational requirements in a timely manner.
• Accepts and completes all duties positively and without conflict
• Cooperates, helps others, and improves the performance of the unit
• Prepares patient for intravenous (IV) Injections: Starting the IV and maintaining access and administers IV radiopharmaceuticals per approved protocols
• Adheres to established protocols, QA guidelines, and regulatory requirements
• Orients new employees
• Other duties as assigned
• Completes all mandatory department, educational and hospital requirements
• Adheres to current Infection Control and Safety Standards

Additional Information

Employees must be in a regular position, working 20 hours or more per week (.50 FTE or greater) to qualify for benefits.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent, successful completion of an approved course in Radiologic Technology, 5 years of experience conducting routine diagnostic procedures, three of which were in an advanced modality, as applicable. Required
• Bachelor's Degree in Radiologic Technology may substitute for up to one year of experience in conducting routine diagnostic procedures. Required
• ARRT - American Registry of Radiologic Technologists as a Nuclear Medicine Technologist Upon Hire Required or
• CNMT - Certified Nuclear Med Tech with the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board Preferred
• BCLS - Basic Life Support
• Comparable combination of education and experience may substitute for the above requirements.
