Job summary

WVUH West Virginia University Hospitals seeks a Radiology Technologist to rotate through diagnostic areas, perform imaging procedures, and ensure high-quality results while minimizing exposure. You will educate patients, support the team, and maintain safety and protocol compliance.

Responsibilities include coordinating workflow, supervising students, and adhering to ARRT and WV state requirements. Scheduled 36 hours weekly in Morgantown, WV, with hospital-wide policies guiding practice.

Qualifications

Job description

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Graduate of a Medical Imaging Program.
  • Must possess current or temporary Radiography License as required by state board where services will be provided:
    • MD: Radiographer License through Maryland Board of Physicians
    • OH: Radiographer License through Ohio Department of Health
    • PA: No state licensure required
    • WV: Radiography License or Temporary Radiography License through West Virginia Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy Technology Board
  • Must be nationally certified as defined by location where services will be provided:
    • MD: Registered Radiography Technologist by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) upon hire
    • OH: Registered Radiography Technologist by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) upon hire
    • PA: Registered Radiography Technologist by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) within six (6) months of graduation from a Medical Imaging program
    • WV: Registered Radiography Technologist by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) prior to expiration of WV temporary license
  • Certification in Basic Life Support within 30 days of hire.
  • State criminal background check and federal (if applicable) as required for regulated areas.
CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Rotate in all diagnostic areas for development of technical skills (fluoro, mobiles, routine, operating room, endoscopy, orthopedics).
  • Perform image procedures based on assessment of patient status, service requests, and imaging protocols, monitored by periodic image evaluations and supervision.
  • Produce images of optimal quality using imaging equipment and systems, ensuring proper image delivery and archiving.
  • Select exposure factors based on patient size, condition, and pathology to achieve optimal image quality while minimizing radiation exposure.
  • Minimize radiation exposure to self, patients, and staff using shielding, collimation, inverse-square law, and by limiting repeat exposures.
  • Maintain expertise in anatomy, physiology, and pathology relevant to imaging to optimize procedures and ensure patient care and safety.
  • Assess patient needs and provide imaging-related support for comfort, hygiene, range of motion, and related care.
  • Prepare contrast agents, specific pharmaceuticals, and sterile trays for imaging procedures according to protocols.
  • Educate patients regarding radiographic procedures by explaining the process and answering questions.
  • Promote teamwork by positively interacting with technical, support, nursing, and medical staff.
  • Engage in problem solving, crisis management, system implementation, and performance improvement to promote efficient, high-quality, cost-effective patient care.
  • Display imaging techniques, patient care, and guest-relations behaviors in accordance with ARRT code of ethics, WVUH administrative policies, radiology department policies, state and federal regulations, and The Joint Commission guidelines.
  • Report equipment failures immediately upon identification.
  • Complete all in‑services and competencies by required dates, applying acquired knowledge.
  • Position patients accurately per established protocols.
  • Participate in coordination of daily workflow.
  • Provide minimal instruction to radiology students regarding patient positioning, technique selection, equipment manipulation, and accessory device use; offer clinical supervision within radiology program policies and accrediting body requirements.
  • Ensure all vital components of the imaging process are completed in full.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Differentiate various shades of gray and color as depicted on a monitor or photograph.
  • Stand and walk for prolonged periods.
  • Lift, push, and pull up to 50 pounds.
  • Carry items up to 20 pounds.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT
  • Exposure to minimal radiation within national occupational standards, monitored by radiation safety and dosimeter use.
  • Exposure to airborne particles and bodily fluids.
  • Operation of imaging equipment with automated moving parts.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Interact positively with patients, families, and healthcare team members.
  • Prioritize and manage multiple situations simultaneously.
  • Improvise with altered positioning techniques, equipment manipulation, and accessory device use when routine positioning is compromised due to patient condition, age, or ability.
RADIOTHERAPY CLINICAL LADDER

The Radiology Technologist Clinical Ladder is a system-wide advancement program designed to enhance professional development, reward quality clinical performance, promote quality imaging care, and improve job satisfaction for respiratory therapists. To advance, a technologist must meet the requirements of the current level and fulfill additional experience, education, and certification criteria.

  • Level1 – No experience required; all technologists with less than 12months of experience start at Level1.
  • Level2 – Meets requirements for Level1; one year of experience; complete competency of Skill Set Tech1 plus additional skills.
  • Level3 – Meets requirements for Level2; one continuing education pathway; three years of experience; compliance in three leadership/supervisory skills; complete competency of Skill Set Tech1 and2 plus three additional skills.
  • Level4 – Meets requirements for Level3; one continuing education pathway; five years of experience; compliance in five leadership/supervisory skills; complete competency of Skill Set Tech1,2, and3 plus three additional skills.
