Job summary

Lonza in Bend, OR is seeking an R&D Upstream Scientist/Engineer to join a dynamic team delivering breakthroughs in biomanufacturing. You will conduct mammalian bioreactor experiments and apply chemical, biological, and engineering fundamentals to drive quality results.

Qualifications

  • B.S. or equivalent in Chemical Engineering or Bioengineering, or B.S. in Cell/Molecular Biology, or Biochemistry.
  • Effective verbal and written communication abilities.
  • Growth mindset and a strong drive to learn and contribute outside of your educational specialty.
  • Previous experience in a biology lab is preferred; prior experience with mammalian cell culture is desirable.
  • Bias toward collaboration.

Responsibilities

  • Complete experiments in a mammalian bioreactor setting.
  • Apply knowledge of biology, chemistry, or engineering fundamentals including mass/energy conservation, heat/mass transfer, biochemistry, and basic modeling.
  • Learn to operate a range of unit operations and demonstrate proficiency for quality results.
  • Maintain an accurate lab notebook documenting execution and results.
  • Collaborate with computational science teams to improve data management tools.
  • Evaluate instruments, equipment, processes and systems to improve safety, quality, and performance.
  • Communicate technical information to internal teams and clients via oral/written reports.
  • Prepare technical memos, reports and technology transfer documentation.
  • Lead execution of basic lab functions and suggest improvements to practices.

What you will do:

Completing experiments in a mammalian bioreactor setting

Applying knowledge of biological, chemical, or engineering fundamentals including mass and energy conservation, heat and mass transfer, biochemistry, cell and molecular biology, and basic mathematical modeling

Learning and understanding how to safely operate a range of unit operations and demonstrating proficiency for achieving quality results

Maintaining an accurate and detailed laboratory notebook to document the execution and results of experiments

Collaborating with computational science teams to improve data management tools

Evaluating instruments, equipment, processes, and systems to improve safety, quality, and performance

Communicating technical information to internal teams and clients through oral and written correspondence, presentations, and reports

Preparing written documents such as technical memos, reports, and technology transfer documentation

Leading the execution of basic lab functions and suggesting operational improvements to laboratory practices

What we are looking for:

B.S. or equivalent experience in Chemical Engineering or Bioengineering, or B.S. or equivalent experience in Cell or Molecular Biology, or Biochemistry

Effective verbal and written communication abilities

Growth mindset

A strong drive to learn and contribute outside of your educational specialty

Previous experience in a biology lab is preferred; previous experience with mammalian cell culture is desirable
