Job summary

The Applied Research Laboratory at Penn State University in State College, PA, is seeking a highly analytical R&D Engineer to join the Applied Sustainment Technologies Division. You will lead data-driven maintenance analytics, develop predictive models, and deliver engineering assessments impacting Navy and DoD-sponsored projects.

Qualifications

  • Experience solving complex analytical or engineering problems using structured methodologies.
  • Reliability engineering, failure analysis, or predictive analytics experience.
  • Proficiency in technical computing languages such as Python, R, SQL, or similar.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills in multi-disciplinary, collaborative environments.

Responsibilities

  • Lead development of analytic methods including ML, anomaly detection, and predictive maintenance models.
  • Develop and evaluate reliability models for complex naval or defense systems.
  • Translate technical findings into clear, actionable recommendations for technical and executive audiences.
  • Build, validate, and document data pipelines, analytics tools, dashboards, and cloud-based environments.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams for system readiness and engineering change evaluations.
  • Contribute to proposals, technical reports, and customer deliverables.
  • Provide mentorship and technical guidance across project teams.
