Job summary

Formlabs in Somerville, MA is seeking a 3D Printing R&D Engineer to advance our printing processes. You will design and run experiments, develop new printer architectures, and collaborate with mechanical, software, and systems teams.

You'll build test fixtures, analyze data, and iterate hardware and software based on results. A strong engineering background and CAD experience are essential; programming in Python or MATLAB is a plus, with B.S./M.S./PhD welcome.

• Have experience with experiment design and data analysis to inform design decisions.
• Able to design and build test fixtures for experiments.
• A website or portfolio document showing off your current and past projects.
• Understand programming and scientific computing, ideally Python or Matlab.
• Familiar with mechanical design, mechatronics, and CAD modeling.
• B.S., M.S., or PhD in an engineering field (all are welcome).

Responsibilities

• Create new 3D printing techniques - from developing new printer architectures to validating minute changes in Galvo control
• Opportunity to contribute to investigating new technologies
• Tackle complex and open-ended problems across multiple engineering disciplines
• Perform experiments and use the results to inform and develop improvements in software or hardware
• Evaluate current printer performance for areas for improvement
• Partner with other engineering teams to implement improvements to current products such as redesigning support structure algorithm based on experimental results

Our growing R&D team is a mix of mechanical, systems, and software engineers. We develop and maintain the Formlabs printing process. Our team works closely with other engineering teams to research next‑generation printers and materials. We use engineering, physics, and experimentation to turn ideas into beautiful and reliable products.

Compensation

Every Formlabs employee receives equity because everyone contributes to building the company. You’ll have the opportunity to share financially in the value we create together, with a shared incentive to build a business that succeeds over the long term. Equity will be a significant portion of your total compensation, and will increase over time in proportion to your impact. The base pay will be determined by your skills, qualifications, experience, location, and expected impact on the organization.

The Annual Base Pay Range For This Role Is

$90,000—$132,000 USD
