Job summary

Hormel Foods Corporation invites applications for an R&D Chemistry Laboratory Intern. The role is based at our Corporate Headquarters in Austin, MN, with ~40 hours/week from late May to mid-August, offering hands-on experience in a food laboratory and chemistry methods.

The internship pays $21–$24 per hour, includes housing allowance and expense reimbursement, and provides 401k matching and paid time off. U.S. citizenship or work authorization without sponsorship is required.

Qualifications

• Must have at least Junior status with August 2027/December 2027/May 2028 graduation.
• Strong math skills and basic lab skills including quantitative and qualitative analysis.
• Strong work ethic and analytical/problem solving skills.
• Able to stand for extended periods and lift up to 50 lbs.
• U.S. citizenship or authorization to work in the United States; no sponsorship required.
• Must be comfortable with preparation and consumption of Hormel Foods products.
• Access to a personal vehicle to commute to work.

Responsibilities

• Works with supervised or detailed procedures in the Chemistry Lab.
• Performs routine to highly complex assays safely and accurately.
• Participates in other R&D duties as assigned.
• Develops communication, analytics, and critical thinking skills.
• Projects may include method validation/improvement, material cataloguing, LIMS testing, and lab presentations.

Job Purpose: To gain real world experience as a technician in an accredited food laboratory.

Responsibilities

• Works with an intermediate degree of supervision and/or detailed procedures.
• Performs routine, complex and occasionally highly complex assays in the Chemistry Lab (all activities must be performed in a safe, accurate and efficient manner.
• Performs other duties assigned, including responsibilities in other areas of Research and Development.
• Practice communication skills, use analytical techniques, and apply critical thinking skills.
• Projects may include:
• Chemistry method validation or improvement.
• Foreign material cataloguing and organization.
• Laboratory information management system (LIMS) testing.
• Project presentation to lab work group at conclusion of internship.

Requirements

• Must have at least Junior status (graduate in August 2027, December 2027, or May 2028) and major in Chemistry, Biology, Food Science, or related field with a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA preferred.
• Strong math skills and basic lab skills including quantitative and qualitative analysis.
• Possess a strong work ethic and analytical/problem solving skills.
• Must be capable of standing for extended periods of time, handle strong odors and may, on occasion have to lift 50 lbs.
• Must be a Citizen or National of the United States, a lawful, permanent resident, or have authorization to work in the United States.
• Applicants must not now, or any time in the future, require sponsorship for an employment visa.
• Must be comfortable with the preparation and consumption of various Hormel Foods products which may include but are not limited to pork, beef, chicken, and nuts
• This position will require access to and/or the utilization of a personal motor vehicle to get to and from the workplace.

Location and Hours

• Position is based out of our Research & Development Laboratories at our Corporate Headquarters in Austin, MN.
• Position is approximately 40 hours per week beginning late May and ending mid-August

Compensation

• Competitive wage
• The base pay range is $21 to $24 per hour; however, actual compensation is influenced by a wide array of factors including, but not limited to, job-related knowledge, skill set, level of experience, and specific office location
