Job summary

Merchants Metals is seeking a Quality Technician to support the QMS, performing quality control checks and daily inspections to ensure safety and quality standards. You will gather data and assist in implementing process improvements on the shop floor.

You will test during manufacturing, record results, participate in audits, track CTQ data, and help maintain specifications. Strong attention to detail and teamwork are essential for success.

Qualifications

• Associates degree in a technical discipline or 5+ years in manufacturing quality.
• BS degree with 0–2 years acceptable.
• Ability to perform basic mathematical equations.
• Reading and interpreting drawings and specs.
• Knowledge of inspection equipment and methodologies.
• English reading/writing/speaking; bilingual Spanish preferred.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The primary focus of the Quality Technician is to support the activities that ensure compliance to all customers and regulatory requirements through the Merchants Metals QMS (Quality Management System). The technician will perform quality control checks and daily inspections on company products to ensure they meet required safety and quality standards. Gathers and prepares data, helps create and implement process’, and drive actions centered around quality control improvement.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS, DUTIES, AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Works safely by following all EHS procedures. Identifies potentially unsafe situations and immediately resolves and/or raises awareness to the appropriate individual(s).
• Conducts testing and inspections during manufacturing processes to ensure that products comply with ASTM quality standards.
• Completes all tests required for each product and records results for every sample tested. Conducts re-testing of product as needed to support quality investigations.
• Participate in both internal and external audits to verify conformance of activities to quality assurance standards.
• Gathers CTQ data (specifications, measurements, weights) from the manufacturing process and inputs onto an online database. Helps lead and execute actions on the shop floor as it relates to quality control improvement.
• Tracks and maintain key process control parameters.
• Tracks and maintains specifications to ensure compliance with the lower end of the specifications in accordance with ASTM standards
• Collect and summarize technical information and trends. Prepare reports on key shop metrics and help drive quality initiatives and projects
• Understands product specifications and decides whether to certify or reject specific products
• Leads real time root cause analysis and corrective actions for quality issues as they arise on the shop floor.
• Ability to troubleshoot equipment issues as it relates to quality and facilitate maintenance (mechanical aptitude).
• Create, maintain, and/or revise specialized quality documentation (e.g., procedures, work instructions, etc.)
• Is a leader in training and implementing process’ and procedures.
• Reports all equipment problems to maintenance and QC leaders
• Maintains excellent housekeeping in all QC areas
• Builds strong working relationships with team members, internal and external departments as necessary

Requirements

NECESSARY SKILLS, BACKGROUND & COMPENTENCIES:

• Quality control experience in a production, manufacturing, or industrial environment strongly preferred
• Mechanical background and aptitude strongly preferred
• Auditing experience strongly preferred
• Strong interpersonal, analytical, writing and communication skills
• Standard manufacturing process knowledge
• Excellent attention to detail
• Self-directed, independent, and highly motivated
• May be exposed to noise, dust, fumes, airborne particles

REQUIRED EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION:

• Associates degree in a technical discipline with limited experience or 5+ years of experience in a related manufacturing or quality position.
• Will consider entry level candidates with 0–2 years experience with BS degree in technical discipline.
• Must be able to perform basic mathematical equations
• Working knowledge in reading and interpreting drawings, technical specifications, and industry standards.
• Knowledge of a wide variety of inspection and test equipment, and methodologies.
• Experience with computer-based applications (MS Word, MS Access, MS Excel)
• Read, write, and speak English – Bilingual with Spanish highly preferred.
