Job summary

JTEKT Automotive in Piedmont, SC seeks a Quality Team Lead for the 2nd shift to plan, coordinate, and direct the quality assurance program. You will lead in-process inspection and testing, drive continuous improvement, and ensure products meet established standards.

The role requires directing a team of quality specialists and technicians, training staff, and aligning quality objectives with production to maximize reliability and minimize costs.

Quality Team Lead (2nd shift)
Summary/Purpose

Plans, coordinates, and directs quality assurance program designed to ensure continuous improvements and production of products consistent with established standards by performing the following duties personally or through subordinates; Continually increase quality awareness in all associates.

Essential Duties and Accountabilities:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform the essential duties satisfactorily.

  • Directs associates (specialist/technicians) engaged in inspection and testing activities to ensure continuous control over materials, facilities, and products; Assist quality technicians and specialists with inspection and testing in the quality and performance lab, must be competent in all inspection and testing tasks required.
  • Formulates and maintains quality control objectives and coordinates objectives with production procedures in cooperation with Quality Area Manager/Supervisor to maximize product reliability and minimize costs.
  • Coordinates activities to ensure quality of products meets specifications
  • Insures that all test and inspection procedures are carried out; makes management aware if corrective and preventative actions are not being followed as required.
  • Assists in investigation of quality complaints
  • Assist with the implementation and maintenance of the quality policy, quality procedures and instructions and quality planning and execution of control plans; Works with Quality Specialists to develop or revise quality standards and working practices to ensure compliance with standards.
  • Identify and complete all training required for quality associates; provides on-the-job training to subordinates; track training performance metrics
  • Compiles, stores and retrieves production data relative to product quality
  • Establishes or adjust work procedures to meet production schedules; recommends measures to improve production methods, equipment performance, and quality of product (Note: Team Leader may, following review of quality analysis, stop production process if quality issues warrant such actions)
  • May perform other duties as requested, directed or assigned by management.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • Quality Specialist and Technicians report to Team Leader on their assigned shift
Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.

  • Able to prioritize and handle multiple tasks; work flexible hours/overtime as needed
  • Experience with SPC, receiving inspection, performance testing, product testing, manufacturing troubleshooting, metrology and gage calibration
  • Knowledge of GD&T and SPC; ability to understand, demonstrate standard work and solid problem-solving skills using a variety of statistical and root cause tools
  • Ability to successfully perform all testing and measurement with the quality area and support others doing the same work
  • Ability to use problem solving approaches
  • Excellence in attendance and verbal/written English communication skills with all levels with organization
  • Knowledge of various inspection techniques; quality systems, gauging and close tolerance measurement
  • Able to learn to operate and maintain various equipment at an acceptable level with emphasis on quality, IATF 16949 standard, ISO 14001/45001 standard, safety/environmental, 5S and productivity.
  • Able to perform in a team environment and support company policies
Education and Experience:
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent with equivalent relevant work experience; Associate degree in a related field (preferred)
  • Work experience in a quality role in a relevant industry with proven degree of proficiency

  • Specific vision abilities required with this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
  • The performance of this position requires exposure to manufacturing areas which require the use of personal protective equipment such as steel toed shoes, safety glasses with side shields.
