This role ensures products meet AWS, ASME, and customer specs while maintaining a safe shop environment. You will perform and oversee inspections, maintain quality documentation, manage welder qualifications, coordinate safety initiatives, and train employees across fabrication and coating operations.

Qualifications

• Must hold Active CWI certification.
• OSHA 10-hour certification required.
• Minimum 1 year of professional steel fabrication experience.
• Minimum 1 year of coating/lining experience.

Responsibilities

• Inspect incoming steel, materials and consumables for quality compliance.
• Inspect fabricated components for dimensional accuracy and weld quality.
• Ensure AWS D1.1, AWS D1.6 and ASME Section VIII compliance.
• Maintain welder qualification records and quality documentation.

Job Overview

Moon Fabricating Corp. is seeking an experienced Quality & Safety Director to oversee quality control and workplace safety across our steel fabrication, coating, and lining operations in Kokomo, IN.

This position is responsible for ensuring fabricated products meet AWS, ASME, customer, and project specifications while maintaining a safe and compliant shop environment. You will perform and oversee inspections, maintain quality documentation, manage welder qualifications, coordinate safety initiatives, and provide training to employees across fabrication and coating operations.

The ideal candidate is a Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) with hands-on steel fabrication experience, a strong understanding of welding codes, and the ability to take ownership of both quality and safety programs.

What You'll Do

• Inspect incoming steel, materials, parts, and consumables to verify compliance with project and quality requirements.
• Inspect fabricated components for dimensional accuracy, weld quality, workmanship, and compliance with drawings and specifications.
• Ensure welding and fabrication activities comply with applicable AWS D1.1, AWS D1.6, and ASME Section VIII, Division 1 requirements.
• Perform and document welding inspections throughout the fabrication process.
• Maintain records for welder qualifications, certification testing, inspections, and quality documentation.
• Identify nonconforming work and coordinate corrective actions with fabrication and production teams.
• Oversee quality requirements related to coatings, linings, and surface preparation.
• Train and mentor employees on proper welding, fitting, rubber lining, painting, quality, and safety procedures.
• Coordinate calibration and maintenance of welding equipment, inspection tools, gauges, and other QC equipment.
• Develop, maintain, and enforce shop safety procedures and safe work practices.
• Conduct safety meetings, training, and jobsite or facility inspections.
• Coordinate additional safety training with third-party providers when required.
• Investigate quality or safety concerns and help implement corrective and preventative actions.
• Maintain accurate inspection, certification, training, and safety records.
• Work closely with production leadership to ensure quality and safety requirements are incorporated into daily operations.
• Promote a shop culture where employees take ownership of both workmanship and workplace safety.

Required Qualifications

• Active Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification.
• Current OSHA 10-hour certification.
• Minimum 1 year of professional steel fabrication experience.
• Minimum 1 year of experience with industrial coatings and/or lining applications.
• Strong working knowledge of AWS D1.1 and AWS D1.6 welding codes.
• Working knowledge of ASME Section VIII, Division 1.
• Experience performing welding and fabrication inspections.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints, fabrication drawings, welding symbols, and project specifications.
• Understanding of welder qualification and certification requirements.
• Ability to identify weld defects and fabrication nonconformances.
• Experience enforcing safety procedures within a fabrication, manufacturing, or heavy industrial environment.
• Strong documentation, communication, and organizational skills.
• Ability to effectively train employees and communicate quality and safety expectations.

Preferred Qualifications

• Working knowledge of NACE/AMPP surface preparation and coating standards.Experience inspecting industrial coatings, rubber linings, or other corrosion-resistant systems.
• Additional OSHA or industrial safety certifications.
• Previous experience leading a Quality Control, Quality Assurance, or Safety program.
• Experience developing or delivering employee training programs.
• Previous leadership experience within a steel fabrication or industrial manufacturing environment.
