Job summary

Austal USA is seeking a Quality Inspector to perform in-process quality assessments during vessel construction using Visual Testing (VT) and other NDT methods. You will consult with Class Surveyors and customer representatives during external inspections and guide production teams on workmanship corrections.

The role requires Level II VT certification, 2+ years of maritime trade experience, and the ability to mentor others in NDT.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma/GED required.
  • Minimum six months as QTS II at Austal USA or two years NDT Level II experience.
  • Two years maritime experience in the trade and VT Level II certification within six months.
  • Level II VT certification required.
  • Willing to learn new NDT methods and procedures.
  • Ability to perform basic math and use metric measurements.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.

Responsibilities

Job description

REPORTS TO: Quality Inspection Supervisor or Quality Inspection Foreman

SUPERVISES: Not Applicable

DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Performs in-process quality assessments during vessel construction, including compliance audits prior to external surveys, utilizing Visual Testing (VT), or other non-destructive testing (NDT) inspection methods.
  • Consults with Class Surveyors and / or Customer Representatives during external inspections as necessary.
  • Provides guidance to production employees and Supervision for workmanship corrections required.
  • Shall document, accept or reject workmanship based upon contract acceptance criteria for surface inspections.
  • Provides mentoring and on-the-job-training (OJT) for NDT certification of other Inspectors.
  • Must be willing to work any shift.
  • Complies with Austal’s employee handbook general guidelines, company procedures and policies.
  • This position description is not intended to be all-inclusive. Incumbents will perform other tasks as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS / KNOWLEDGE / EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma/GED required.
  • Required minimum of six months (6) months of experience as a Quality Trades Support II (QTS II) at Austal USA for internal candidates or two (2) years NDT Level II experience in a related field for external candidates.
  • Austal “A Class & B Class” employees may be considered in lieu of six (6) months as a Quality Trade Support II (QTS II). Candidate must possess two (2) years’ maritime experience in their trade and have completed one (1) year at Austal and be able to become Level II certified Visual Testing (VT), within six (6) months of successful completion of formal classroom training required.
  • Level II certification in Visual Testing (VT) method required.
  • Other NDT experience is a plus and will be considered equivalent for preferred applicants.
  • Willingness and ability to learn any new NDT methods and / or skills assigned by management.
  • All company provided training shall be based on company needs at the company’s discretion.
  • Willingness and ability to increase understanding of the applicable standards and requirements for the job.
  • Proven ability to perform simple math (add, subtract, multiply and divide) and measure using the metric system.
  • Basic knowledge of shipyard practices and operational principles of the shipbuilding process.
  • Basic understanding of quality principles required.
  • Work autonomously with minimal direction or management support.
  • Ability and willingness to work irregular or extended work schedule as required.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, work under pressure and be self-motivated.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to receive and carry out written and verbal instructions required.

ADDITIONAL GUIDELINES:

Candidates must meet the following employment eligibility guidelines to be considered for employment with Austal USA:

  • 18 years of age or older at time of application
  • Able to provide proof of US Person Status
  • No felony convictions of Theft/Deception or Violent crimes within seven years from disposition date
  • No felony convictions of Drug crimes within three years from disposition date
  • Willing to submit to a drug screen
  • Willing to submit to a background check
  • High School Diploma/GED or comparable trade experience with comparable trade experience defined as five (5) or more years of experience working in the applicable trade, two (2) years of experience in shipbuilding, or, education in the trade comparable to apprenticeship.

TOOLS: Familiar with use and function of basic power and hand tools.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by
an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Must be able to
tour all vessels and work sites.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand,
walk, use hands to manipulate, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, climb and
balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally
required to sit.
Specific physical requirements include the following:

  1. Must have the ability to bend, squat, stoop, crawl, and kneel.
  2. Perform prolonged standing.
  3. Ability to turn head from side to side and about the vertical axis.
  4. Ability to turn body at the waist from side to side and about the vertical axis.
  5. Lift/push/pull 50lbs to 75lbs on an occasional basis.
  6. Lift/push/pull up to 20lbs on a frequent basis.
  7. Must have the ability to climb in a safe manner (climbing as a minimum includes stairs, scaffolding, ladders, and ramps).
  8. Ability to work at heights above 12’ while working from ladders, scaffolding and/or man lifts.
  9. Able to work at a variety of levels (ex. waist, eye, overhead).
  10. Demonstrate the ability to safely and appropriately use required tools and equipment.
  11. Demonstrate good balance while working on uneven surfaces and maneuvering obstacles.
  12. Possess sufficient handgrip and coordination to carry and operate tools and equipment.
  13. Ability to utilize personal protective equipment (hard hat, safety glasses, steeltoes shoes, goggles, respirator, safety harness, safety line, flotation gear, etc.) safely per OSHA standards.
  14. Ability to withstand cold and hot temperatures.
  15. Ability to enter 18” x 36” openings and work in confined spaces for prolonged periods of time.
  16. Able to respond to verbal and audible sounds/commands.
  17. Able to utilize adequate visual skills.
  18. Ability to fully extend the arm while reaching overhead, reaching out, reaching to the side and reaching down.
  19. Ability to perceive attributes of an object/material such as size, shape, temperature and texture by means of receptors in the hands and fingers.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to humid conditions, bright flashing lights, moving mechanical parts, high precarious places, outside weather conditions, and extreme heat. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes and/or airborne particles at or below the PEL, toxic or caustic chemicals, and heat and cold. The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud, + 90 dB.
