Job summary

United Employment Group, Inc. seeks a Metallurgical Quality Manager for our Michigan foundry to oversee quality management systems, lead metallurgical control of gray and ductile iron, and drive continuous improvement.

You will manage the metallurgical and quality control lab, supervise technicians, perform RCCA, approve raw materials, and represent the site during customer audits and new product introductions.

Qualifications

• Extensive experience overseeing QMS (ISO 9001, IATF 16949) and continuous improvement.
• Hands-on metallurgical control of gray and ductile iron chemistry and nodularity evaluation.

Responsibilities

• Oversee the foundry's quality management system and certification compliance.
• Direct metallurgical control of gray and ductile iron chemistry to meet specs.
• Lead RCCA investigations and cross-functional corrective actions.
• Manage metallurgical and quality control lab operations and testing.
• Develop and maintain inspection procedures, control plans, and PPAP docs.
• Review incoming raw materials and supplier quality for casting integrity.
• Supervise quality technicians and inspectors; train on inspection methods and SPC.
• Monitor scrap rate, PPM, and first-time yield; drive improvements to targets.
• Serve as the primary technical contact for customers during audits and new product development.
• Ensure safety and environmental compliance in lab operations.

Job description

• Oversee the foundry's quality management system (ISO 9001, IATF 16949, or equivalent), ensuring ongoing certification compliance and continuous improvement across all departments.
• Direct metallurgical control of gray and ductile iron chemistry, including charge makeup, inoculation practices, and nodularity/microstructure evaluation to meet customer and industry specifications.
• Lead root cause investigation and corrective action (RCCA) on internal and customer-reported defects, working cross-functionally with melt, molding, and finishing to eliminate recurring quality issues.
• Manage the metallurgical and quality control lab, including spectrometer operation, sample preparation, mechanical testing, and metallographic analysis.
• Develop and maintain inspection procedures, control plans, and PPAP documentation to support new part launches and ongoing production.
• Review and approve incoming raw material and supplier quality, including scrap, alloys, and sand system components critical to casting integrity.
• Supervise and develop quality technicians and inspectors, providing training on inspection methods, SPC, and defect identification specific to iron castings.
• Monitor and report key quality metrics (scrap rate, customer PPM, first-time yield) and drive continuous improvement initiatives to meet plant targets.
• Serve as the primary technical quality contact for customers during audits, quality reviews, and new product development, representing the foundry's metallurgical capabilities.
• Ensure compliance with safety and environmental regulations as they relate to quality and metallurgical lab operations, including proper handling of chemicals and testing equipment.
