Job summary

General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems (GA-EMS) seeks an experienced quality inspector to examine optical, electrical, and mechanical components and assemblies. You will set up and operate inspection tools, maintain calibration records, and generate reports to ensure compliance with military and industry standards.

The role requires strong drawing interpretation, GD&T knowledge, and experience with CMM PC-DMIS, optical/EO inspection, and ERP systems.

Qualifications

  • Typically requires an associate's degree, trade school certificate, military training, or equivalent in quality inspections or certification by a professional group such as ASQ or AWS, and five or more years of progressive experience in electrical, mechanical, electromechanical or metrology inspection and calibration.
  • Ability to read and understand complex engineering drawings and specifications, and perform non-routine mathematical computations.
  • Strong computer and communication skills to interface with employees, managers and vendors.
  • Experience with optical, electro-optical, and mechanical inspection.
  • Knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Ability to work independently or lead in a team environment and work extended hours as required.
  • Experience reviewing, approving, witnessing, accepting/rejecting complex electronic test procedures and results for system verification.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect optical, machined and electrical components and assemblies to ensure compliance with regulatory guidelines and customer specifications.
  • Maintain calibrated tools and schedule service/repair of equipment; manage calibration databases.
  • Document receiving inspections and maintain Objective Quality Evidence (OQE) databases.
  • Develop documentation of findings and communicate results to staff across disciplines.
  • Support quality processes for optical systems and payloads to meet mission requirements.
  • Coordinate with electrical, mechanical, and systems teams to align processes and priorities.
  • Initiate nonconformance reports or Quality Notifications and perform First Article Inspections.

Job Summary

General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems (GA-EMS) is a supplier of advanced electromagnetic systems, related power equipment and other high technology products for a variety of government and commercial applications. These include products such as the design and fabrication of linear motors, superconducting and conventional rotating motors, power inverters, high-energy capacitors, radiation monitoring systems, high-voltage direct current power distribution systems, and numerous other products.

Under minimal supervision this position is responsible for inspecting a wide variety of Optical, Electrical and mechanical components and assemblies, tooling fixtures and material to ensure compliance with customer requirements, company specifications and quality requirements. Sets up, operates, inspects, tests, and adjusts new and reworked tools, dies, gauges, jigs and fixtures for conformance to engineering drawings and specifications. Maintains, processes, and compiles a variety of confidential and sensitive electronic and hard copy reports, records and statistics. Assignments are typically non-routine where judgment and assessment are required to resolve highly complex issues. May conduct inspections at customer or vendor sites.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Inspects Optical, machined and electrical components, assemblies and materials to ensure compliance with appropriate regulatory guidelines (Military Standards, ASTM and ANSI, and ASME Code). Provides various electronic and hard copy reports of inspections and notifies appropriate parties including project engineers.
  • Proficient with using inspection tooling such as calipers gage pins, optical comparator, CMM.
  • Maintains calibrated tools/test equipment and schedules service and repair of equipment. Prepares, updates and maintains calibration computer databases.
  • Performs and documents receiving inspection for materials and components. Maintains a computer database with supporting Objective Quality Evidence (OQE).
  • Develops appropriate documentation of findings and implemented solutions and communicates results to staff.
  • With limited direction, this position is responsible for supporting the quality process of Optical systems and Optical Space Payloads to ensure they meet the mission requirements.
  • Interfaces and collaborates with other disciplines (Electrical, Mechanical, Systems) to ensure processes and priorities are aligned with requirements.
  • Initiates nonconformance reports or Quality Notifications.
  • Performs First Article Inspections IAW AS9100/9102.
  • May observe testing and provide oversight, as necessary, to verify compliance with requirements.
  • May interact with and provide responses to regulatory agencies and customers during their audits and review of company inspection and calibration activities.
  • Verifies quality in accordance standards, processes, procedures and contractual requirements.
  • May coordinate the procurement of standard materials, services and parts for inspections.
  • Responsible for observing all laws, regulations, and other applicable obligations wherever and whenever business is conducted on behalf of the Company.
  • Expected to work in a safe manner in accordance with established operating procedures and practices.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned or required.

Job Qualifications

May substitute additional experience in lieu of formal education and training.
  • Must possess:
    • ability to read and understand complex engineering drawings and specifications, and perform non-routine mathematical computations
    • strong computer and communication skills to effectively interface with employees, managers and vendors
    • experience with Optical, Electro-optical, and Mechanical inspection
    • an intermediate to Subject Matter Expert level of knowledge on Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T)
    • ability to work independently or lead in a team environment is essential as is the ability to work extended hours as required
    • experience reviewing, approving, witnessing, accepting/rejecting complex electronic test procedures and results for system requirement verification
  • Either currently posses, or have the ability to achieve certifications in one or more of the following; IPC-610-A, or IPC-620A, J-STD/Space addendum or equivalent.
  • Knowledge and or experience operating in a clean room environment.
  • SAP/PEO or other ERP systems/software experience is highly desired
  • Experience with black light/white light inspection requirements on optical payloads for FOD and mapping optical filters to scratch/dig per MIL-STD-13830.
  • Knowledge of inspections requirements on critical projects that include mapping defects in High Value Coating, Large Area Optics.
  • Experience programming/operating Coordinate Measurement Machines (CMM) utilizing PC-DMIS software.
  • Ability to perform scratch Dig Optical inspections per MIL-PRF-13830, ISO 10110-7, and/or ANSI/OEOSC OP1.002.
  • Documented experience with ISO 9001 and AS9100 quality assurance program requirements and optics materials.
  • Currently possess or the ability to obtain and maintain DoD "Secret" level security clearance.
