Job summary

Powell in Houston is seeking a Quality Inspector to ensure products meet established quality standards through visual, mechanical, and electrical inspections, testing, and audits. You will document non-conformities and collaborate with production teams to address root causes.

The role requires reading prints and 1–3 years of manufacturing experience, with adherence to ISO practices. This position offers comprehensive benefits in a safety-focused, temperature-controlled facility.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED, or a trade school diploma or certificate.
  • 1–3 years of experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to read prints, including specification sheets, wiring diagrams, schematics, and drawings.

Responsibilities

  • Perform visual, mechanical, and electrical inspections and testing of all equipment manufactured at Powell facilities according to Powell Standards.
  • Program and operate electronic equipment such as microprocessor-based relays.
  • Energize Powell electrical products and other buy-out equipment such as service panels, HVAC, battery chargers, UPS systems, etc.
  • Investigate equipment failures and conduct root-cause analysis.
  • Complete and maintain all test quality-control documentation as required.
  • Perform maintenance on test equipment as needed.
  • Conduct tests using equipment such as multimeter, clamp-on meter, voltage detector, Hi-Pot, etc.
  • Collaborate with all departments (shop, engineering, sales, shipping, fabrication, PCR, switchgear), including customers, to resolve quality-related issues.
  • Participate in continuous-improvement projects.
  • Promote a safety culture and attend all safety meetings.
  • Follow standard work instructions and identify potential risks to product quality.
  • Maintain clean and well-organized work areas.
  • Learn and understand basic electrical principles and relevant mechanical experience.

Job Description

A Quality Inspector is responsible for ensuring that products or services meet established quality standards and specifications. The role involves performing visual, mechanical, and electrical inspections, tests, and audits to identify defects or deviations from quality requirements. Inspectors use various tools and techniques to measure and evaluate the quality of materials, components, and finished products, document and report non‑conformities, and work closely with production teams to address quality issues and implement corrective actions. They may also participate in the development and improvement of quality control processes and procedures.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Perform visual, mechanical, and electrical inspections and testing of all equipment manufactured at Powell facilities according to Powell Standards.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED, or a trade school diploma or certificate.
  • Minimum 1–3 years of experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to read prints, including specification sheets, wiring diagrams, schematics, three‑line drawings, wiring lists, and part drawings.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in quality inspection for electrical or electronic equipment or components.
  • Intermediate experience working with industry codes and standards and the ability to refer to applicable codes.

Working Conditions
  • Safety‑sensitive position in a temperature‑controlled manufacturing or industrial environment with occasional outside activities.
  • Must always wear personal protective equipment (e.g., hard hats, safety glasses, hearing protection, safety harnesses, respirators) when required.
  • Work at a desk and computer in an office environment is required.
  • Must be able to work from all types of ladders (step ladders, "A"‑frame ladders, and all size extension ladders) and scaffolding.
  • Work at heights usually no higher than 30 feet in the air or using proper lift equipment.
Physical Requirements
  • Maintain body equilibrium and agility to prevent falling when walking, standing, crouching, ascending, or descending stairs.
  • Perform repetitive bending at the waist and knees, and extension of arms and hands in any direction.
  • Stand, walk, and cover 50–300‑foot distances for long periods with only occasional sitting.
  • Climb stairs frequently throughout the shift.
  • Look over shoulders and work with both arms above shoulders and use both arms at full length frequently.
  • Apply or exert force continuously up to 50 lbs using upper extremities.
  • Use hand tools such as tin snips, hammer, and power tools (some vibrating) for long periods with frequent repetition.
