Job summary

AM General LLC is seeking a Quality Engineer II - Contractor to lead quality planning and product-quality initiatives across new production programs. You will develop robust quality plans, drive APQP activities, and coordinate cross-functional teams with a focus on preventing defects and ensuring customer satisfaction.

The role requires 5+ years in automotive/defense manufacturing, strong knowledge of APQP, FMEA, SPC and GD&T, and the ability to coach engineers while collaborating with

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Manufacturing Technology or related technical field.
  • 5+ years experience in Automotive, Defense or manufacturing sectors.
  • Working knowledge of APQP, FMEA, PCP, MSA, SPC and GD&T.
  • Familiarity with ISO 9001 and IATF 16949 standards.

Responsibilities

  • Establish product quality standards aligned with customer requirements.
  • Lead APQP planning and validation for new production programs and changes.
  • Develop quality plans and improve quality control loops across build, confirm, and audit phases.
  • Lead cross-discipline problem solving using 8D and Lean Six Sigma methods.
  • Develop and improve quality procedures and acceptance standards.
  • Interface with manufacturing, quality, and engineering teams.
  • Manage containment for process, supplier, or engineering non-conformances.
  • Lead quality functions including dimensional layout and gage calibration as needed.
  • Support quality system changes for new models and ECNs; coach junior engineers.
  • Support IPT, PDT and program reviews and drive quality initiatives.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Establish Product Quality Standards aligned with customer requirements
  • Lead and support APQP process planning and validation for new production programs and on-going change including development of PFMEAs, Special Characteristics identification, Process Control Plans, Measurement Systems, Inspection Planning, and Process Capability (SPC)
  • Develop Quality plans and continuously improve the effectiveness of production Quality Control Loops (Build, Confirm and Audit Effectiveness)
  • Lead and conduct cross-discipline problem solving and continuous improvement initiatives for improving build quality using methodologies such as 8D and Lean Six Sigma (LSS)
  • Develop and continuously improve Quality procedures, processes, and acceptance standards
  • Interface with other departmental personnel such as manufacturing, quality, and engineering
  • Manage product quality containment for process, supplier, or engineering non-conformances
  • Lead and support Quality functions including dimensional layout, corrosion lab, and gage calibration as required
  • Lead and manage Quality System changes supporting new model and engineering change
  • Coach and guide less experienced engineers in the execution of the Quality Engineering function
  • Leadership and support for Quality Business Plan Deployment, Integrated Product Team (IPT), Product Development Teams (PDT), Engineering Change Notice (ECN), Engineering-Try-Out and Production-Trial-Run review and approval
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Manufacturing Technology or related technical experience in the Automotive, Defense or Manufacturing industry
  • 5+ years experience in Automotive, Defense or manufacturing related field
  • Working knowledge of AIAG quality core tools Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP), Failure Mode Effects Analysis (FMEA), Process Control Plans (PCP), Inspection Planning, Measurement System Analysis (MSA), and Statistical Process Control (SPC)
  • Working knowledge of dimensional GD&T and check fixtures
  • Familiarity with ISO 9001 and IATF 16949
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Applications
  • Proficiency in problem solving and problem solving methodologies
PHYSICAL EFFORT
  • Sight: must be able to regularly read computer screen, reports, and various documents with detail and clarity to accomplish work tasks in a safe and efficient manner, including regular use of adequate close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus
  • Hearing: must be able to regularly hear well enough to communicate
WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Physical Location: This position operates between an office and manufacturing plant environment and is often assigned to a specific shift or hours. The Employee must be able to perform job functions in an environment with varying difficult work conditions such as extreme cold, heat, inclement weather, at heights, and/or while exposed to constant/intermittent loud noises
  • Teamwork: This position will work with others to ensure efficiency in the workplace
  • Listening Skills: This position will need to understand how to use machinery properly and safely to prevent accidents and ensure all tasks are completed accurately
  • Ability to follow instructions: Managers assign tasks and responsibilities, which vary; this position should be able to follow instructions competently
  • Methodical approach: Production lines follow a set process, so this position needs a methodical approach to ensure all tasks are completed in the correct order for a smooth-running production line
  • Concentration: This position may perform the same or similar tasks repeatedly, so a strong level of concentration when carrying out these tasks is important for quality control purposes. This role is often fast paced, so being able to maintain focus at all times is important
