VCS-HR develops workforce-management software for public-safety agencies, municipalities, and private-sector employers. Our products support complex scheduling, time and attendance, payroll, training, compliance, and workforce operations.
About the Role
We are seeking an experienced, hands-on QA engineer with software development skills (SDET) to join our small engineering team as our second QA hire. You will share responsibility for manual testing and test-case management while building UI and API test automation from the ground up. Success means learning complex business rules, finding meaningful defects, and steadily expanding reliable automated coverage.
Key Responsibilities
- Own testing for assigned features and releases: plan coverage, prepare test data, maintain cases in Jira/Xray or a similar tool, execute tests, and communicate results and risks.
- Perform thorough manual, exploratory, regression, integration, and release testing across web, mobile, API, and data workflows, including permissions, error handling, and edge cases.
- Learn HR and workforce-management workflows; investigate customer issues, document reproducible defects, and work with developers to verify fixes and prevent recurrence.
- Build and maintain reusable UI and API automated tests, starting with high-risk workflows and expanding coverage over time. Investigate failures and keep tests dependable.
- Participate in backlog planning and requirements discussions; clarify acceptance criteria early and help developers consider testability and quality before coding begins.
- Balance day-to-day manual testing with automation improvements, take initiative, and follow work through to completion.
Required Experience and Skills
- Proven hands-on software testing experience, with strong manual and exploratory testing skills and a record of learning a complex business domain such as HR, payroll, fintech, or a comparable industry.
- Experience managing the software testing lifecycle, including test planning, case management, execution, defect tracking, regression coverage, and reporting.
- Software development education, training, or practical experience, with object-oriented programming fundamentals and the ability to write, debug, and maintain test code.
- Experience building code-based UI and API test automation using tools such as Playwright, Selenium, Appium, and supporting API testing libraries.
- A self-starter who works independently, communicates clearly, advocates for quality, and helps the broader engineering team prevent defects earlier.
Preferred Experience
- TypeScript, React.js applications, C#/.NET, or VB.NET; familiarity with Node.js and SQL Server is helpful.
- Using AI tools to generate or expand automated tests, with careful review of correctness and coverage.
- Connecting automated tests to the build and code-review process so changes receive fast, repeatable checks.
- Mobile automation, performance testing, or testing sensitive employee and payroll data.
Employment Status
This position remains full-time and at-will, consistent with Company policy and New Jersey law.
