Job summary

Silfex Inc., a Lam Research Company, is seeking an experienced Metrology Engineer to design and implement measurement systems for electrical, optical, and mechanical inspection. You will analyze measurement needs, develop new methods, and recommend calibration standards to meet evolving business requirements.

Responsibilities include leading root cause analysis, establishing dimensional control at NPI, leveraging CMMs and laser equipment, and training inspectors on GD&T per ASME Y14.5.

Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science degree in a technical discipline; in lieu of degree, combined experience/certification considered.
• Familiarity with metrology equipment for root cause diagnostics (CMM, VCMM, gages, laser).
• Gage and inspection knowledge; experience solving measurement problems.
• Proficient in data analysis techniques including DOE and Six Sigma; strong statistics knowledge.
• Understanding of blueprint reading and geometric dimensioning and tolerance.
• Ability to lead change and manage multiple projects in a dynamic environment.

Job Description: Essential Function

Apply measurement science, mathematics, physics, and engineering to design and develop systems, equipment, and methods for electrical, dimensional, optical, physical, mechanical, environmental, and/or chemical inspection, measurement, and test equipment (IM&TE). Analyze measurement needs based on accuracy and precision requirements. Analyze and solve measurement problems using mathematical and engineering knowledge. Use statistics to analyze measurements and properly characterize and control processes. Develop new measurement methods and procedures. Recommend equipment, calibration standards, and IM&TE to meet evolving business requirements.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Develop measurement techniques for new and existing products
• Support Quality Engineering function in leading root cause and corrective action for internal and external quality issues
• Work with cross-functional teams in developing, evaluating and implementing corrective actions.
• Establish better dimensional control and capability at new product introduction and continuous improvement throughout the product life cycle
• Leverage various inspection equipment (CMMs, VCMMs, Contracers, laser).
• Support metrology department in equipment selection, evaluation, and qualification.
• Assure metrology system is compliant to all relevant standards
• Assist in evaluating and improving process performance through application of measurement science
• Create inspector certification standards and training on GD&T per ASME Y14.5
• Provide expert support to others that independently test, calibrate, and repair electrical, mechanical, electromechanical, and electronic measuring, recording, and indicating instruments and equipment for conformance to established standards
• Support Lean Manufacturing efforts within work cell(s)/value stream(s) to improve established metrics such as Cycle Time Reduction, budget variances, inventory levels, 5S, TPM, One Piece Flow, SPC, First Pass Yield, Schedule Adherence, Training, Setup Reduction, and Safety.
• Support Silfex’s Lean Manufacturing culture by:
  • Owning the continuous improvement process for measurement and actively supporting other areas
  • Ensuring all employees are engaged in daily improvement activities
  • Providing direction and guidance on where to focus attention and improvement efforts
• Assemble calibration procedures for instruments and equipment, according to blueprints, schematics, technical manuals, and other specifications
• Develop and maintain a working knowledge of the Silfex Quality Management System and properly apply Quality and Operating Procedures as appropriate
• Perform all work related tasks in a safe manner and report any unsafe conditions to Silfex Management
• Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science degree in a technical discipline, engineering preferred. In lieu of a Bachelor’s degree, a combination of experience, certification and education may be considered.
• Combined experience in the following areas:
  • Familiarity with appropriate metrology equipment for root cause diagnostics (Scanning, CMM, VCMM, Component gages, laser measurement, optical measurement).
  • Gage and inspection knowledge.
  • Experience solving measurement problems related to dimensional, process or transactional issues
  • Proficient in the use of various data analysis and problem solution techniques including DOE and Six Sigma.
  • Expert understanding of statistics and their application to process control and improvement.
  • Solid understanding of the capabilities and use of various metrology systems and their use in a manufacturing setting.
• Expert knowledge of blueprint reading and geometric dimensioning and tolerance.
• In depth understanding of manufacturing processes including engineering/technical support practices necessary to assure production improvement
• Ability to lead change and establish operational metrics/key indications for process control, communication and performance improvement.
• Ability to manage multiple projects and changing priorities, make sound decisions and work effectively in a team environment.
• Certifications as an ASQ Certified Quality Engineer, ASQ Six Sigma Green or Black Belt, ASQ Calibration Technician or Lean Manufacturing are highly valued.
