Job summary

Dorman Products in Bloomington, IN seeks a Quality Engineer to ensure product quality and process effectiveness across the manufacturing lifecycle. You will partner with Production, Engineering, Supply Chain, and Suppliers to prevent defects, drive improvements, and lead CAPA programs.

The role emphasizes root cause analysis, NPI support, and Built-in-Quality practices. Ideal candidates have 3–5 years in manufacturing quality and strong data-analysis skills, with CQE or Six Sigma Green/Black

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Quality Management, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or related field.
  • 3-5 years of quality engineering experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • ASQ CQE and/or Six Sigma Green Belt or Black Belt preferred.
  • Experience with quality systems, supplier quality, and new product introduction processes.
  • Experience leading cross-functional teams and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Strong knowledge of quality tools including 8D, FMEA, Six Sigma, SPC, RCA, Control Plans, APQP and PPAP.
  • Ability to analyze complex data and develop effective solutions.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and project management skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, including Excel for data analysis.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes and quality management systems.

Responsibilities

  • Quality Assurance & Process Improvement: review designs, prototypes, and production samples; implement quality standards and process controls.
  • Problem Solving & Corrective Actions: lead 8D, FMEA, Six Sigma analyses; develop CAPAs; investigate complaints and returns.
  • Supplier Quality: review supplier submissions; resolve non-conformances; monitor supplier performance.
  • Data Analysis & Reporting: collect and summarize quality data; produce reports and dashboards; monitor KPIs.
  • New Product Introduction (NPI): define quality requirements; validate processes; participate in pilots and validation.
  • Leadership & Training: mentor operators on quality systems; lead cross-functional teams; promote a culture of quality.

Job Summary

The Quality Engineer is responsible for ensuring product quality and process effectiveness throughout the manufacturing lifecycle. This role partners closely with Production, Engineering, Supply Chain, and Suppliers to prevent defects, resolve quality issues, and drive continuous improvement initiatives. The Quality Engineer leads root cause analysis activities, develops corrective actions, analyzes quality data, and supports new product introductions while promoting Built-in-Quality practices across the organization.

Primary Duties

Quality Assurance & Process Improvement

  • Review, measure, analyze, and evaluate current and new product designs, prototypes, pilot builds, and production samples.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain quality standards, inspection procedures, and process controls.
  • Work closely with Production, Engineering, and Suppliers to prevent quality issues and drive continuous improvement across all operations.
  • Establish and maintain in-process inspection criteria and Built-in-Quality production methods.
  • Support manufacturing teams in improving process capability, efficiency, and product quality.

Problem Solving & Corrective Actions

  • Lead root cause investigations utilizing methodologies such as 8D, FMEA, Six Sigma, Fishbone Diagrams, and 5 Why Analysis.
  • Develop, implement, and verify corrective and preventive actions (CAPA) to eliminate recurring quality issues.
  • Investigate customer complaints, warranty claims, product returns, and non-conforming materials.
  • Conduct product inspections and failure analysis to identify causes and prevent future occurrences.
  • Prepare and communicate quality countermeasures to internal and external stakeholders.

Supplier Quality

  • Review supplier Pilot Part submissions and validation documentation.
  • Collaborate with suppliers to resolve non-conformances and implement corrective actions.
  • Monitor supplier quality performance and assist in continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Ensure supplier compliance with established quality requirements and specifications.

Data Analysis & Reporting

  • Collect, analyze, interpret, and summarize quality data to identify trends and opportunities for improvement.
  • Prepare quality reports, performance metrics, dashboards, and management review presentations.
  • Monitor key quality indicators including scrap, defects, warranty claims, returns, customer complaints, and process performance.
  • Utilize statistical tools and data analysis techniques to support continuous improvement efforts.

New Product Introduction (NPI)

  • Support new product launches by defining quality requirements and validating manufacturing processes.
  • Participate in pilot builds, tryouts, and product validation activities.
  • Ensure quality standards and inspection methods are established before production launch.
  • Collaborate with Engineering and Manufacturing teams to identify and mitigate quality risks during development.

Leadership & Training

  • Lead and facilitate cross-functional teams to resolve complex quality and manufacturing issues.
  • Mentor and train operators, technicians, and production personnel on quality systems, inspection methods, and best practices.
  • Promote a culture of quality, accountability, and continuous improvement throughout the organization.
  • Effectively communicate quality concerns, solutions, and project updates to all levels of the organization.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Quality Management, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or related field.
  • Minimum 3-5 years of quality engineering experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • ASQ Certified Quality Engineer (CQE) and/or Six Sigma Green Belt or Black Belt preferred
  • Experience with quality systems, supplier quality, and new product introduction processes.
  • Experience leading cross-functional teams and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Strong knowledge of quality tools including: 8D Problem Solving, FMEA, Six Sigma Methodologies, Statistical Process Control (SPC), Root Cause Analysis, Control Plans, APQP and PPAP
  • Ability to analyze complex data and develop effective solutions.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and project management skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication abilities.
  • Ability to influence and collaborate effectively across departments and with suppliers.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, including Excel for data analysis.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes and quality management systems.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $69,000.00 to $85,100.00. This role is also eligible for a bonus. The actual base pay offered to the successful candidate will depend on multiple factors, including but not limited to job-related knowledge and skills, experience, business needs, geographical location, and internal pay equity. Compensation decisions are made based on the specific facts and circumstances of each role and candidate.
