Job summary

Amrize is seeking a Quality Engineer to oversee quality control, raw material verification, and process quality assurance for asphalt modified bitumen roofing and waterproofing products. You will directly manage the lab team, ensure Cpk achievement, and drive continual improvement through SPC and CAPA.

The role requires a BS in a relevant engineering field, 5+ years in quality, and 3+ years in asphalt or related manufacturing with supervisory experience.

Qualifications

• BS degree in a relevant engineering or science field as listed.
• 5+ years of quality experience in manufacturing environments.
• 3+ years in asphalt, rubber/polymers, or continuous web manufacturing with supervisory exposure
• Proficiency in SPC (Minitab), ISO 9001 systems, and ASTM testing methods

Responsibilities

• Oversee quality control and raw material verification for asphalt modified bitumen products.
• Lead lab team, manage staffing, and ensure lab safety and efficiency.
• Monitor SPC to reduce yield variation and scrap.
• Ensure products meet ASTM, UL, and code standards.
• Lead 8D, 5-Why, and Fishbone RCA investigations; implement CAPA.
• Oversee calibration programs and gauge R&R studies for lab equipment.
• Partner with operations, process engineering, and R&D for NPD trials.

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Quality Engineer oversees quality control, raw material verification, and process qualityassurance for asphalt modified bitumen (SBS/APP) roofing and waterproofing membranemanufacturing. This role directly manages the quality laboratory team—including the LabSupervisor and Quality Technicians—ensuring process Cpk achievement and products meetstrict internal specifications and ASTM industry standards through leadership, statistical processcontrol, continuous improvement, and root-cause failure analysis.

WHAT YOU'LL ACCOMPLISH

• Team Leadership & Management: Directly supervise, mentor, and evaluate the LabSupervisor and Quality Technicians. Manage lab staffing schedules, shift handoffs, andoperational priorities.
• Testing & Lab Operations: Oversee physical, chemical, and mechanical testingexecuted by the lab team on raw materials (asphalt flux, polymers, mineral fillers,reinforcement mats) and finished Mod Bit roll products.
• Process Control & SPC: Monitor line parameters (blend viscosity, dispersion, compound thickness, coating weight) using Statistical Process Control (SPC) to reduceyield variation and scrap.
• Standards Compliance: Ensure product compliance with ASTM standards, UL ratings,and national and regional building code certifications.
• Root-Cause Analysis: Lead 8D, 5‑Why, and Fishbone investigations into non‑conforming materials, product defects, and customer claims; implement permanentcorrective and preventive actions (CAPA).
• Equipment & Calibration: Oversee laboratory maintenance, calibration programs, andgauge R&R studies for lab equipment (rheometers, ring‑and‑ball softening pointapparatus, penetrometers, tensile testers).
• Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with operations, process engineering, andR&D to support new product development (NPD) trials and process optimization.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

Education:

• B.S. in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry, or Mechanical Engineering

Field of Study Preferred:

Required Work Experience:

• 5+ years experience in Quality
• Preferred; 3+ years in Asphalt, rubber/polymers, or continuous web manufacturing, with 2+ years in a supervisory or leardership capacity.
• Proficient in SPC software (Minitab), ISO 9001 quality systems, and ASTM testing methods

• Certifications: Six Sigma Black Belt or CQE (ASQ) preferred
