Job summary

Amrize North America Inc. is seeking a Quality Engineer to oversee quality control, raw material verification, and process quality assurance for asphalt modified bitumen roofing and waterproofing membranes.

You will lead the lab team, ensure ASTM and UL compliance, and drive continuous improvement using SPC and root-cause analysis. You will coordinate with operations, process engineering, and R&D for new product development and process optimization, ensuring products meet strict internal specs

Qualifications

  • B.S. in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry, or Mechanical Engineering.
  • 5+ years experience in Quality.
  • Preferred 3+ years in Asphalt, rubber/polymers, or continuous web manufacturing with leadership experience.
  • Certifications: Six Sigma Black Belt or CQE (ASQ) preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Directly supervise the Lab Supervisor and Quality Technicians; manage staffing and priorities.
  • Oversee testing of raw materials and finished Mod Bit roll products.
  • Monitor process parameters using SPC to reduce yield variation and scrap.
  • Ensure compliance with ASTM standards, UL ratings, and building codes.
  • Lead 8D, 5-Why, and Fishbone investigations; drive CAPA actions.

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Quality Engineer oversees quality control, raw material verification, and process qualityassurance for asphalt modified bitumen (SBS/APP) roofing and waterproofing membranemanufacturing. This role directly manages the quality laboratory team—including the LabSupervisor and Quality Technicians—ensuring process Cpk achievement and products meetstrict internal specifications and ASTM industry standards through leadership, statistical processcontrol, continuous improvement, and root‑cause failure analysis.

WHAT YOU'LL ACCOMPLISH
  • Team Leadership & Management: Directly supervise, mentor, and evaluate the LabSupervisor and Quality Technicians. Manage lab staffing schedules, shift handoffs, andoperational priorities.
  • Testing & Lab Operations: Oversee physical, chemical, and mechanical testingexecuted by the lab team on raw materials (asphalt flux, polymers, mineral fillers,reinforcement mats) and finished Mod Bit roll products.
  • Process Control & SPC: Monitor line parameters (blend viscosity, dispersion, compound thickness, coating weight) using Statistical Process Control (SPC) to reduceyield variation and scrap.
  • Standards Compliance: Ensure product compliance with ASTM standards, UL ratings,and national and regional building code certifications.
  • Root‑Cause Analysis: Lead 8D, 5-Why, and Fishbone investigations into non‑conforming materials, product defects, and customer claims; implement permanentcorrective and preventive actions (CAPA).
  • Equipment & Calibration: Oversee laboratory maintenance, calibration programs, andgauge R&R studies for lab equipment (rheometers, ring-and-ball softening pointapparatus, penetrometers, tensile testers).
  • Cross‑Functional Collaboration: Partner with operations, process engineering, andR&D to support new product development (NPD) trials and process optimization.
WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR
Education:
  • B.S. in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry, or Mechanical Engineering
Required Work Experience:
  • 5+ years experience in Quality
  • Preferred; 3+ years in Asphalt, rubber/polymers, or continuous web manufacturing, with 2+ years in a supervisory or leardership capacity.
  • Proficient in SPC software (Minitab), ISO 9001 quality systems, and ASTM testing methods
