Job summary

U. S. Steel is seeking a Utility Person to support production and service units through hands-on tasks such as operating torches, hand tools, and mobile equipment in a heavy industrial environment.

The position is entry-level with progression to a Utility Technician after training. Responsibilities include assisting in maintenance, transporting materials, and working near molten metal while wearing required safety gear.

Qualifications

  • Must pass a written assessment test and a quality assessment exam.
  • Ability to work rotating 8-hour shift schedules, including Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays.
  • Willingness to work overtime as needed.
  • Strong adherence to safety procedures; must wear hard hats, safety glasses, hearing protection, protective clothing, boots with metatarsal protection, and respirator equipment when necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Perform tasks that support various producing units using hand tools, pneumatic equipment, gauges, oxygen lances, power-actuated tools, and torches.
  • Handle, transport, and process product and materials.
  • Work with materials that may be hot, heavy, sharp, or contain hazardous chemicals.
  • Carry out manual labor and lift up to 25 lbs.
  • Assist in inspecting and performing maintenance on equipment.
  • Work in various areas of the mill with environmental conditions that can be hot, cold, dirty, greasy, wet, and noisy.
  • Work in close proximity to molten metal as required.
  • After initial training, transition to a Utility Technician role operating material handling equipment such as overhead and mobile cranes, tractors, trucks, dozers, loaders, boom trucks, and feeders.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Must have above average computer skills and experience with Microsoft Office 365, Outlook, and an ERP system.
  • Previous experience in a quality-related job function.
  • Must pass a written assessment test and a quality assessment exam.
  • Ability to work rotating 8-hour shift schedules, including Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays.
  • Willingness to work overtime as needed.
  • Strong adherence to safety procedures; must wear hard hats, safety glasses, hearing protection, protective clothing, boots with metatarsal protection, and respirator equipment when necessary.
  • Demonstrated punctuality, consistent attendance, and self-direction for operational success.
