Job summary

University of Connecticut, Facilities Operations, Storrs Campus, is hiring Qualified Craft Workers (Plumbing and Steamfitting) across multiple shifts. Positions require a State P‑1 or P‑2 license, 37.5 hours per week, and offer a salary range of $65,516 to $84,235 yearly.

• Adds water treatment chemicals to boilers.
• Makes estimates of time, personnel and determines required materials on assigned tasks.
• Keeps necessary records.

• May inspect and repair steam traps and/or vaults fed by main system at various locations.

1st, 2nd, and 3rd Shift Positions – Various Work Schedules

Salary Range: $65,516.00–$84,235.00 Yearly– Individuals new to state service start at the minimum of the pay plan.

UConn’s Facilities Operations Department has five job openings, for QCW Plumber/Steamfitters at the Storrs Campus. A current State of Connecticut P-1 or P-2 license is required. These are permanent, full‑time positions 37.5 hours per week.

The hourly salary is $33.47 per hour and is non‑negotiable for those new to State Employment; the hourly rate of pay for current NP‑2 employees is calculated based on current salary and step.

These positions are categorized as “Open to the Public”; current UConn NP‑2 employees will be given preference in the hiring process. The following are the current work schedules and locations this announcement is recruiting for:

• 1st Shift Plumbing Shop: Monday – Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Supervisor: Jason Grivois
• 1st Shift Plumbing Shop: Sunday – Thursday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Supervisor: Jason Grivois
• 2nd Shift Evening Trades Shop: Tuesday – Saturday, 3:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., Supervisor: John Baldesweiler
• 2nd Shift Evening Trades Shop: Sunday – Thursday, 3:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., Supervisor: John Baldesweiler
• 3rd Shift Plumbing Shop: Sunday – Thursday OR Tuesday – Saturday, TBD and dependent upon operating needs, 11:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m., Supervisor: Jason Grivois

The 2nd and 3rd shift positions are eligible for shift differential. Weekend differential is applied to hours worked on Saturday or Sunday on 1st, 2nd, and 3rd shift positions, if the entire 7.5 hour shift is worked.

This job search will be utilized to backfill any vacancies that are created by internal lateral transfers that occur in the Plumbing Shop or Evening Trades Shop. Current UConn NP‑2 QCW Plumbing employees will be contacted via email in advance of the job search closing date to be provided with an opportunity to select a new work schedule through lateral transfer.

This job is categorized as Emergency Support Services/Essential Staff. Must be willing and able to work during emergency closures or delayed openings due to inclement weather or for significant events that affect campus operations.

These positions require participation in the Weekly On-Call Rotation Schedule; when assigned to the on‑call rotation, the assigned cell phone must be carried, and calls must be responded to within 15 minutes.

Applicants must also be willing to respond to emergencies on overtime (nights, weekends, or holidays).

Facilities Operations NP‑2 employees may also be required to perform job duties as assigned at any of the Regional Campuses.

Minimum Qualifications – General Experience

Two (2) years of general experience in performing skilled plumbing and steamfitting trades.

For state employees this experience is interpreted at the level of a Skilled Maintainer or Transportation Maintainer 2.

Minimum Qualifications – Substitutions Allowed

• Graduation from a vocational or technical school with a diploma designating completion of subject requirements in a maintenance trade area may be substituted for two (2) years of the general experience.
• At the University of Connecticut: Satisfactory performance and completion of the UConn Facilities Internship Training Program may be substituted for the general and special experience as determined by UConn Facilities Operations and Human Resources Management.
• At other state agencies: Two (2) years of experience as a Qualified Craft Worker trainee in a designated maintenance trade area may be substituted for the general and special experience.
• Experience performing technical duties within the plumbing and steamfitting trade area on a military base, aircraft carrier or large compound may be substituted for the general and special experience on a year‑for‑year basis.

Special Requirements

• Incumbents must possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications, including a State of Connecticut plumbing and pipe‑fitting license.
• Incumbents may be required to possess or acquire additional licenses, permits and/or certifications as authorized by the appointing authority.
• Incumbents must have a current State of Connecticut P‑1 or P‑2 license.
• Incumbents must be able to read and interpret mechanical blueprints for building and utility systems.

Physical Requirements

• Incumbents must have adequate physical strength, stamina, agility and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such fitness to perform the duties.
• A physical examination may be required.
• Incumbents will be required to drive and operate motor vehicles, including vans, box trucks and pick‑up trucks ranging in size from compact to heavy‑duty.
• Incumbents must have adequate strength and agility to walk up and down stairs frequently and climb ladders independently. Must be able to lift, carry and push material weighing up to 75 lbs. Must possess ability to utilize ladders, scaffolding, high‑lifts and enter confined spaces.
• Incumbents must be able to inspect, troubleshoot and repair equipment that is part of a wide range of electrical and mechanical systems and wear personal protective equipment when necessary.

Working Conditions

• Incumbents may be required to lift moderate to heavy weights and use protective equipment such as respirators and safety goggles. Exposure to risk of injury from equipment, extreme weather or environmental conditions is possible.
• The appointing authority may require completion of hazardous materials training programs, such as asbestos, PCB, PFAS, consistent with EPA guidelines for operations and maintenance during employment. Protective equipment is required.

Preferred Qualifications

• Five or more years of experience performing a wide range of tasks in the plumbing and steamfitting trade.
