Job summary

Independent Can Co in Baltimore, MD is seeking a Quality Assurance Technician I to analyze data, study variations in product quality, and assist Production in understanding causes of production problems. The role supports corporate Quality Management and trains staff in quality control techniques.

The incumbent will lead living and driving the Company Core Values and High-Performance Work Culture on site. Shift structure and extensive QA duties are included.

SUMMARY

Quality Assurance Technician I through data analysis, studies variations in product quality and assists the Production Department in understanding the nature and causes of production problems. Incumbent may assist in implementing the corporate Quality Management program and/or train employees in quality control/measurement techniques and systems. Assures all departments are following operating procedures. Must be the site leader in living and driving the Company Core Values and High-Performance Work Culture.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Performs first article inspections and tests of cans, can components, packaging products, etc. per documented procedures. Performs in process inspections as needed to support production.
  • Recommends and obtains dispositions for noted defects.
  • Proven ability to use the following types of tools, and evaluate their measurement results to determine conformance to specifications:
    • Hand tools (e.g., calipers, micrometers, linear scales).
    • Gages (e.g., pins, thread, custom gages).
    • Optical tools (e.g., comparators, profiles, microscopes).
    • Electronic measuring equipment (e.g., digital displays, output).
    • Weights, balances and scales.
    • Hardness testing equipment (e.g., Brinell, Rockwell).
    • Surface plate methods and equipment.
    • Force measurement tools (e.g., torque wrenches, tension meters).
    • Angle measurement tools (e.g., protractors, sine bars, angle blocks).
    • Color measurement tools (e.g., spectrophotometer, color guides, light boxes).
    • Gage maintenance, handling, and storage.
  • Performs calibrations of measuring and test equipment per documented procedures.
  • Prepares and maintains QA records, including PC based records.
  • Works on other shifts than normally assigned when needed to cover for scheduled absences or when otherwise needed.
  • Assists in training of personnel regarding quality procedures, GMP and measurement techniques.
  • Prepares Certificates of Conformance for ICC manufactured products and maintains records.
  • Notifies responsible supervisors/plant managers of noncompliance to established operating procedures.
  • Reviews and evaluates written procedural documentation.
  • Reviews and evaluates responses, corrective actions & effectiveness of Internal & External Process Improvement Events.
  • Reviews quality records to identify repetitive quality issues and provides written analysis to supervisor.
  • Assists in preparation, documentation & performance of process, GMP, and other quality audits.
  • Performs dimensional studies/analysis of manufactured items in accordance with appropriate sampling plans and prepares written results.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must demonstrate excellent basic math skills
  • Must demonstrate good visual acuity and must not be color blind
  • Must demonstrate manual dexterity sufficient to operate measuring and test equipment
  • Must have basic personal computer skills
  • Must be able to work well and communicate effectively with others
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

The successful candidate must have as a minimum high school diploma or general education degree (GED) and one year of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. This position may require ongoing offsite specialized training.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Incumbent must possess the ability to read and comprehend instructions, correspondence, and memos and the ability to write correspondence. They must also have the ability to effectively present information one-on-one and in small group situations to and for other employees of the organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

The incumbent must have the ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume and the ability to apply concepts of basic algebra, geometry and trigonometry.

COMPUTER SKILLS

The incumbent must have the ability to perform basic computer functions and use various software applications in the QA department. This position requires the ability to generate and format documents, tables and charts using MS Word and Excel. The ability to analyze data and report the results logically and draw recommendations from the data is also required.

REASONING ABILITY

Incumbent must have the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Must have the ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands and fingers to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, and sit. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. The employee must be able to spend extensive time in a production floor environment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
