Job summary

GAI Consultants Inc. seeks a QA/QC Protection & Control Engineer 2 to oversee QA/QC for protection and control systems in high‑voltage substations. This role focuses on design reviews, standards compliance, and interfacing with project teams across multiple locations in a hybrid capacity.

The candidate should have a 6+ year engineering background, a B.S. in Engineering or a technical field, and a PE license is preferred but not required.

Qualifications

  • QA/QC the engineering design and review of protection and control systems for transmission and distribution substations (69kV–500kV)

  • QA/QC protection and control drawings to interface with substation layout and design
  • QA/QC of control and relay panel layouts and specifications
  • QA/QC of design specs including bill of materials
  • QA/QC on auxiliary systems sizing (AC/DC load centers, batteries, chargers)

GAI is seeking a highly skilled and experienced QA/QC Protection & Control Engineer 2 to oversee QA/QC on design, development, and implementation of protection and control systems for high-voltage substations. This role will serve as a QA/QC specialist only within the engineering team, ensuring that all protection and control designs meet regulatory standards, project requirements, and industry best practices. We value work-life balance and offer flexibility – this position can be performed in a hybrid capacity in these locations: Overland Park, KS, Pittsburgh, PA, Lisle, IL, Orlando, FL, or in a fully remote capacity.

Job Duties:

  • QA/QC the engineering design and review of protection and control systems for transmission and distribution substations (typically 69kV to 500kV).
  • QA/QC protection schemes including one-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, control schematics, and wiring diagrams.
  • QA/QC protection and control drawings to interface with the physical layout and design of substations.
  • QA/QC of control and relay panel layouts including assembling the specifications.
  • QA/QC of design specifications including the overall bill of materials.
  • QA/QC on the design and sizing of auxiliary systems including AC/DC load centers as well as batteries and chargers.
  • QA/QC the design and sizing of conduit, cable, and backup generators.
  • Review junior engineer’s designs, verify they meet client standards and specifications, and identify gaps in client’s protection.
  • Document QA/QC reviews, maintain record documents, and communicate information to the team.

Minimum Years of Experience

  • 6+

Education

  • B.S. Engineering or other technical degree

Certification/Licensure

  • Driver’s License
  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) License – Would like but not required

Technical Responsibilities

  • Designs a complete project, system, component, or process.
  • Prepares complete plans, specifications, and other project documents.
  • Designs and conducts analyses and interprets test data.
  • Begins to develop and reviews complete project documents for conformity and quality assurance

Project and Task Management

  • Assigns tasks to other technical and non-technical staff.
  • Plans and coordinates detailed aspects of the engineering work.
  • Prepares scopes, budgets, and schedules for assignments.
  • Assists with proposals to provide professional services or obtain funding for engineering projects or projects

Management Responsibility

  • Receives general direction on key objectives. Receives guidance, when necessary, on unconventional/complex problems, direction on modified techniques, and new approaches on assignments with conflicting criteria.
  • Mentors junior staff by providing guidance, explaining professional responsibilities, and reviewing work products
  • Attends project meetings and presents specific aspects of engineering assignments.

Communication Skills

  • Communicates effectively to both technical and nontechnical audiences.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to workindoorsin professional office settings.
  • Ability to sit for extended periods whileperforming computer-based tasks.
  • Frequent use of hands and fingers for typing, writing, and handling office equipment.
  • Visual acuity to readprinted materials, digital screens, detailed documents,and perform detailed work.
  • Occasional standing, walking, bending, or reaching within the office environment.Abilityto move between workstations and attend in-person meetings.
  • Ability to lift and carry office materials or equipmentweighingup to 10-20 pounds, with or withoutassistance.
  • Adequatehearingtoparticipatein conversations, phone calls, and virtual meetings.
  • Ability to travel for meetings, training, or business purposes.
