Job summary

GAI Consultants Inc. is seeking a QA/QC Protection & Control Engineer 2 to oversee QA/QC on protection and control systems for high-voltage substations. The role supports design, development, and implementation while ensuring regulatory standards and project requirements are met.

The position offers hybrid work options in multiple U.S. locations or full remote capacity, with a focus on teamwork, leadership, and adherence to industry best practices. A B.S.

Qualifications

• 6+ years of experience in QA/QC for protection and control engineering in HV substations.
• B.S. Engineering or other technical degree.
• Driver's License; PE license would be preferred but not required.
• Willingness to travel for meetings and site visits.

Responsibilities

• QA/QC the engineering design and review of protection and control systems for transmission and distribution substations (69kV–500kV).
• QA/QC protection schemes including one-line, three-line diagrams, control schematics, and wiring diagrams.
• QA/QC protection and control drawings to interface with substations’ physical layout and design.
• QA/QC of control and relay panel layouts including assembling the specifications.
• QA/QC of design specifications including the overall bill of materials.
• QA/QC on the design and sizing of auxiliary systems (AC/DC load centers, batteries, chargers).
• QA/QC the design and sizing of conduit, cable, and backup generators.
• Review junior engineers’ designs for client standards and gaps; document QA/QC reviews.
• Communicate QA/QC findings to the team and maintain records.

Job description

GAI is seeking a highly skilled and experienced QA/QC Protection & Control Engineer 2 to oversee QA/QC on design, development, and implementation of protection and control systems for high-voltage substations. This role will serve as a QA/QC specialist only within the engineering team, ensuring that all protection and control designs meet regulatory standards, project requirements, and industry best practices. We value work-life balance and offer flexibility - this position can be performed in a hybrid capacity in these locations: Overland Park, KS, Pittsburgh, PA, Lisle, IL, Orlando, FL, or in a fully remote capacity.

Job Duties

• QA/QC the engineering design and review of protection and control systems for transmission and distribution substations (typically 69kV to 500kV).
• QA/QC protection schemes including one-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, control schematics, and wiring diagrams.
• QA/QC protection and control drawings to interface with the physical layout and design of substations.
• QA/QC of control and relay panel layouts including assembling the specifications.
• QA/QC of design specifications including the overall bill of materials.
• QA/QC on the design and sizing of auxiliary systems including AC/DC load centers as well as batteries and chargers.
• QA/QC the design and sizing of conduit, cable, and backup generators.
• Review junior engineer's designs, verify they meet client standards and specifications, and identify gaps in client's protection.
• Document QA/QC reviews, maintain record documents, and communicate information to the team.

Minimum Years of Experience

Education

• B.S. Engineering or other technical degree

Certification/Licensure

• Driver's License
• Professional Engineer (P.E.) License - Would like but not required

Technical Responsibilities

• Designs a complete project, system, component, or process.
• Prepares complete plans, specifications, and other project documents.
• Designs and conducts analyses and interprets test data.
• Begins to develop and reviews complete project documents for conformity and quality assurance

Project and Task Management

• Assigns tasks to other technical and non-technical staff.
• Plans and coordinates detailed aspects of the engineering work.
• Prepares scopes, budgets, and schedules for assignments.
• Assists with proposals to provide professional services or obtain funding for engineering projects or projects

Management Responsibility

• Receives general direction on key objectives. Receives guidance, when necessary, on unconventional/complex problems, direction on modified techniques, and new approaches on assignments with conflicting criteria.
• Mentors junior staff by providing guidance, explaining professional responsibilities, and reviewing work products
• Attends project meetings and presents specific aspects of engineering assignments.

Communication Skills

• Communicates effectively to both technical and nontechnical audiences.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to work indoors in professional office settings.
• Ability to sit for extended periods while performing computer-based tasks.
• Frequent use of hands and fingers for typing, writing, and handling office equipment.
• Visual acuity to read printed materials, digital screens, detailed documents, and perform detailed work.
• Occasional standing, walking, bending, or reaching within the office environment. Ability to move between workstations and attend in-person meetings.
• Ability to lift and carry office materials or equipment weighing up to 10-20 pounds, with or without assistance.
• Adequate hearing to participate in conversations, phone calls, and virtual meetings.
• Ability to travel for meetings, training, or business purposes.
