Job summary

Black Canyon Consulting, on NIH/NLM project, is seeking a Python/Django Developer to support robust web applications, APIs, and services for the National Center for Biotechnology Information. The role is full-time and onsite at NIH-NCBI in Bethesda, MD and/or remote work.

You will join NCBI’s team of web developers and software engineers, collaborating with researchers, designers, product managers, scientists, security and DevOps engineers to deliver high-quality, scalable solutions.

Qualifications

• BS in Computer Science or equivalent.
• 3+ years of Full stack Web development using Python and Django or FastAPI with a front-end JavaScript framework.
• Understanding of front-end technologies such as JavaScript, HTML5, and CSS3.
• Experience with relational database modeling and data migration.
• Understanding of accessibility and security compliance.
• Experience with version control systems like Git or SVN.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills and team player.

Responsibilities

• Build robust, performant, user-facing web applications in Python/Django/Angular.
• Develop, create, and ship new functionality for user interaction and scientific data visualization using modern APIs and frameworks.
• Work as an integral part of an agile product team to deliver an unbelievably great user experience.

Black Canyon Consulting (BCC)is searching for a Python/Django Developer to support our work for the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) at the National Library of Medicine (NLM), an institute of the National Institutes of Health.This opportunity is full time and onsite at the NIH-NCBI in Bethesda, MD and/or remote work.

You will join NCBI’s team of web developers and software engineers to build robust, flexible web applications, APIs, and services. This role calls for an expert web developer – with knowledge and experience in modern web development, testing, UI design and usability principles, and ability to work effectively with user researchers, designers, product managers, scientists, security and DevOps engineers.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Build robust, performant, user-facing web applications in Python/Django/Angular, helping scientists disseminate top-quality data to the community
• Develop, create, and ship new functionality for user interaction and scientific data visualization, using modern APIs and frameworks
• Work as an integral part of an agile product team to deliver an unbelievably great user experience
• Deliver responsive, accessible, mobile-friendly code of high quality (automated test/build/deploy)

Requirements

• BS in Computer Science or scientific field (engineering, physics), or equivalent experience
• 3+ years of Full stack Web applications development, using Python and Django or FastAPI, with a front-end JavaScript framework
• Understanding of front-end technologies, such as JavaScript, HTML5, and CSS3
• Experience with relational database modeling and data migration
• Understanding of accessibility and security compliance
• Experience with version control systems like Git or SVN
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills and team player

Preferred qualifications :

• Strong understanding of RESTful API design and principles
• Experience with Authorization systems such as OAuth2
• Experience with Angular Javascript framework
• Excellent collaborative skills
• Experience building and maintaining service-oriented architectures
• Experience implementing event-driven architectures and message-based workflows
• Experience with search engines and backends (Lucene, Solr)
• Experience with automated regression testing
• Experience with agile development process
• Familiarity with message brokers such as RabbitMQ or Redis in support of Celery-based systems
