Job summary

BLN24 seeks a Junior Software Developer to help modernize NOAA weather systems. You will work on backend services in Python, REST APIs, and build front-end features in React. Opportunities to learn AWS event-driven architectures and collaborate with federal stakeholders in an Agile team.

The role offers mentorship from senior engineers, emphasis on secure cloud-native design, and path to broader portfolio applications as priorities evolve.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or in-progress in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field.
• Back-end development: experience building backend services or APIs in Python or another server-side language with ability to learn Python quickly.
• Databases: working knowledge of SQL and relational databases (PostgreSQL, SQL Server, MySQL).
• Testing: experience writing automated unit tests (e.g., pytest).
• Tools and processes: experience with Git and familiarity with agile development practices.
• Cloud: exposure to AWS or another cloud platform through work, coursework, or certification.
• U.S. Citizenship Required: proof of U.S. Citizenship and eligibility for Public Trust clearance.

Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain backend services and REST APIs (Python) and subscription-management functions.
• Build and update user-facing features using React across browsers and devices.
• Develop event-driven components on AWS (Lambda, SQS, S3) and data access for relational DBs.
• Study legacy code and write design docs, API contracts, and diagrams for cloud version.
• Add structured logging, audit trails, and tracing for cross-component issues.
• Write automated tests, test simulators, mocks, and contribute to CI/CD pipelines.
