Summary
Terra-Gen is seeking a PV/BESS (Photovoltaic / Battery Energy Storage System) O&M Technician III to perform scheduled and unscheduled fieldwork required to operate and maintain the Edward/Sanborn projects to standards above industry best practice. Responsibilities include installing new systems, troubleshooting, testing, preventive maintenance, corrective maintenance, and assisting site visits. The technician may also monitor contractor quality and safety practices. The position reports to the Operations Site Supervisor and is located near Mojave, CA. It is a full-time role that may include rotating schedules, overtime, nights, weekends, holidays, and occasional travel.
Responsibilities
- Perform troubleshooting and repair of DC, low voltage AC, data acquisition, meteorological stations, PV, and ESS system components.
- Conduct tests such as open circuit voltage, operating DC current, and resistance.
- Participate in and promote workplace safety, environmental, and procedural standards.
- Maintain positive professional relationships with team members and contractors.
- Perform preventive maintenance on PV systems, including thermography of low and medium voltage equipment.
- Audit third‑party systems for safety and quality concerns.
- Document time, material, expenses, and maintenance records in the CMMS.
- Complete training and qualification requirements within specified timeframes.
- Complete safe work permits and JHA’s as required.
- Prepare and communicate maintenance reports to site management.
- Travel to alternate work sites as assigned.
Qualifications
- Practical knowledge of PV electrical systems and LOTO procedures.
- Basic knowledge of ESS and associated hazards.
- Strong analytical, diagnostic, and problem‑solving skills.
- Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills.
- Strong prioritization skills.
- Driver’s license.
- Journeyman or licensed industrial electrician preferred.
- Knowledge of building and structural construction techniques preferred.
- Certified inverter training by Power Electronics, Sungrow, and/or EPS preferred.
Education and/or Experience
- High school graduate or GED.
- 1‑3+ years of experience at a utility‑scale solar plant.
- Experience with electrical wiring and basic construction practices.
- Technical/science/engineering degree or certificate in energy systems preferred.
- Experience with metering and test equipment.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical, I&C, and mechanical drawings.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
- OSHA 10 and CPR qualification preferred.
- NFPA 70E preferred.
Communication Skills
- Provide analysis to leadership and department managers.
- Create written reports, memos, and emails.
- Communicate effectively with project managers, engineers, vendors, contractors, and internal teams.
Mathematical Skills
- Analyze operating data and identify anomalies.
- Calculate figures such as percentages, lengths, and electrical values.
- Analyze and troubleshoot problems with utility‑scale PV and BESS systems.
Reasoning Ability & Decision‑Making Skills
- Solve practical problems and make decisions with limited standardization.
- Interpret instructions in written, verbal, or diagrammatic form.
Physical Demands
- Inspect and perform maintenance in outdoor construction areas without handicap access.
- Regularly stand, walk, sit, use hands for small parts, kneel, crawl, climb ladders, and use scissor lifts or manlift.
- Lift 50 lb unassisted and up to 100 lb assisted.
Work Environment
The work includes office duties and field inspections that expose the employee to electric shock, heights, mechanical parts, hazardous materials, chemicals, fumes, and airborne particles. Outdoor work involves heat, cold, inclement weather, UV radiation, and may require hearing protection.
