Job description

The work involves responsibility for assisting journey level Pump Station Maintenance Workers II in the maintenance and repair of equipment and appurtenances found in sewage pumping stations. There are several distinctions between the work of this class and classes like Wastewater Treatment Plant Maintenance Helper (Mechanical) and (Instrumentation/Electrical) and Wastewater Treatment Plant Maintenance Worker (Mechanical) and (Instrumentation/Electrical) that perform maintenance and repair work of comparable skill level in wastewater treatment plants; (a) the work of this class exposes incumbents to maintenance and repair problems which demand timely resolution because, unlike wastewater treatment plants, there are no back-up systems in pump stations to provide for sewage pumping; if the stations' equipment cannot be repaired, the sewage spills into homes, streams, or onto land; (b) the work of this class exposes incumbents to problems involving skills and abilities applicable to mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair methods, whereas the work of the aforementioned specialized wastewater treatment plant maintenance classes is limited to the specialty of that class, i.e., mechanical or electrical/instrumentation maintenance and repair; (c) the work of this class requires incumbents to maintain and repair a variety of equipment not utilized in wastewater treatment plants such as submersible and portable trash pumps, grid eductors and high velocity water cleaners, sewage force mains and ancillary equipment, and a variety of alarms, circuitry, and meters and controls. Therefore, the class requires well developed skills in a range of maintenance and repair techniques applicable to specialized equipment found only in pump stations, where no back-up systems exist thus necessitating efficient servicing.

The Pump Station Maintenance Supervisor exercises general supervision over crews in which employees in this class assist journey level workers. This class exercises no supervision over subordinates. Employees in this class need sufficient strength and agility to carry out heavy tasks often in adverse weather, on weekends and holidays, on a rotating basis, and in overtime. Does related work as required.
