Job summary

Penn Medicine Chester County Hospital is seeking a skilled Respiratory Care/Pulmonary Diagnostics professional to promote high-quality patient assessment and care. The role involves performing pulmonary function tests, mentoring staff, and maintaining lab equipment with attention to privacy and billing procedures.

The incumbent will lead training, develop new procedures, and ensure compliance with clinical and regulatory standards while collaborating across disciplines to support patient

Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science required; Masters preferred.
• Minimum 3 years in pulmonary function testing or respiratory care with leadership experience.
• Current PA Respiratory Care license.
• CPFT required; RPFT preferred.
• BLS required; ACLS/PALS within 6 months.

Responsibilities

• Performs routine tests (spirometry, lung volumes, diffusing capacity, airway pressures, bronchodilator evaluation, induced sputum).
• Maintains and monitors equipment integrity in PFT and Exercise labs; requests service when needed.
• Trains and mentors new employees/students in pulmonary and exercise labs.
• Develops and implements new procedures; supports program improvement.
• Maintains supplies and generates reports for procedures and billing.
• Protects patient privacy and complies with applicable laws.
• May cover front desk or perform secretarial duties in emergencies.

General Summary Statement

The incumbent is expected to promote organizational values of patient and visitor satisfaction by demonstrating courtesy and respect for patients and their families, visitors and other employees. Is expected to demonstrate competence in the assessment, treatment and care of patients whose ages range from early adolescence to adulthood/geriatrics. Is expected to exercise a wide latitude of independent judgment. Troubleshoots problems and reports actions taken and results to Clinical Specialist/Supervisor. Capable of calling Clinical Engineering or outside service contractor when in-house troubleshooting fails, after consulting Clinical Specialist/Supervisor.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Essential functions of the position include but are not limited to:


• Performs routine tests (spirometry, lung volumes, diffusing capacity, airway pressures, bronchodilator evaluation, induced sputum), specialized tests (exercise tests, arterial sampling, methacholine challenge studies, shunt studies, high altitude simulation studies), research protocols, performs and monitors quality controls.


• Maintains and monitors general integrity of equipment in both PFT and Exercise labs. Performs complex maintenance and troubleshooting procedures on instruments and equipment as needed. Requests service from Clinical Engineering when indicated.


• Possesses the patience and skills necessary to deal with special problems (i.e.: longer test times, patients with cognitive difficulties, special testing requests, equipment malfunction.)


• Training and mentoring new employees/students in pulmonary lab and exercise lab.


• Shows initiative in development and implementation of new procedures; contributes in assessment of current techniques or does a project which directly benefits Pulmonary Diagnostics Services, Penn Medicine Chester County Hospital or general patient care.


• Maintains/monitors supplies in assigned work area.


• Maintains and generates reports for procedures performed and requisite billing functions.


• Is aware of patient privacy rights in regards to procedures and tests.


• Marginal functions of the position include, but are not limited to:


• May cover the front desk or perform secretarial duties in emergency situations.


• Performs other duties in area of responsibilities as assigned.

Education, Training, and Experience

• Bachelor of Science required; Masters preferred


• Minimum of three (3) years of pulmonary function testing or respiratory care with progressive leadership, and program/project development and management.


• Current license to practice Respiratory Care in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.


• Certified Pulmonary Function Technician (CPFT) required, Registered Pulmonary Function Technologist (RPFT), preferred.


• BLS required


• ACLS, PALS must be completed within 6 months of hire
