Job summary

Howard County Government is seeking a semiskilled worker to perform manual labor and equipment operation in highway maintenance. The role includes handling tools, reading instructions, and following safety procedures.

It requires working with a range of equipment and maintaining facilities, while supporting traffic control and public interactions. The position includes essential personnel status and a six-month window to obtain CDL and flagger certifications.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of methods and techniques of operating and caring for hand and power tools.
• Ability to learn operation of tools and standard practices of operations.
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to learn safe work procedures and perform heavy labor for long periods.
• Ability to maintain positive relationships with the public and coworkers.

Responsibilities

• Operates a variety of equipment (spreaders, rollers, sweepers, etc.) in highway maintenance.
• Performs preventative maintenance on equipment and handles basic repairs.
• Cuts grass and clears debris using lawn and chain-saw tools.
• Lays bricks and builds simple forms for grading and masonry work.
• Sets up work zone traffic control and interacts with the public at sites.
• Inputs data, and performs other related duties as assigned; may be emergency essential.
