The technician uses hand and power tools, vehicles, and assigned equipment; documents completed work and observed conditions; and supports other Public Works operations as needed.

  • Maintains drainage channels, culverts, detention ponds, inlets, outfalls, easements, and related facilities by removing debris, sediment, vegetation, or other obstructions to support water flow and reduce localized flooding risks.
  • Inspects assigned stormwater facilities and work areas for blockages, erosion, damage, access problems, and safety hazards, then reports or records findings so supervisors can prioritize maintenance and repairs.
  • Performs routine maintenance, repair, and construction work on drainage facilities by using hand tools, power tools, construction materials, and assigned equipment to restore or preserve infrastructure function.
  • Mows, trims, removes brush, manages vegetation, and maintains access areas in drainage easements and facilities to keep stormwater systems accessible and reduce obstructions.
  • Applies herbicides only when trained, authorized, and assigned to do so.
  • Repairs or installs drainage components, fencing, concrete features, and erosion-control measures to maintain reliable facilities and limit erosion or other damage.
  • Operates City vehicles, trailers, tools, and construction or grounds-maintenance equipment for assigned work, after receiving required training and authorization, to complete maintenance tasks safely and efficiently.
  • Sets up and removes temporary work-zone controls, including signs, cones, barricades, and warning devices, to protect employees, motorists, pedestrians, and the work area.
  • Inspects, cleans, stores, and performs routine service on assigned tools, vehicles, and equipment, and reports defects or repair needs to help keep equipment safe and ready for use.
  • Completes work orders, inspection notes, equipment logs, and other basic records using paper forms or City electronic systems to document work, track asset conditions, and support operational planning.
  • Reviews work orders, maps, sketches, and instructions before or during assignments to locate work sites, understand task requirements, and carry out work as directed.
  • Responds to service requests and citizen concerns by gathering information, observing reported drainage conditions when assigned, and referring findings to the appropriate supervisor to support a timely response.
  • Assists other Public Works divisions and City departments with maintenance projects, special events, and operational assignments to support City services when stormwater workload and staffing allow.
  • Participates in emergency response and recovery activities, including flood response, debris removal, traffic control, sandbagging, facility protection, and emergency repairs, to protect the public and help restore essential services.
  • Follows City policies, departmental procedures, work-zone controls, equipment instructions, and applicable environmental and safety requirements to reduce risk to employees and the public.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Education and Experience:
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent required.
Special Qualifications:
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and be able to obtain a valid Texas driver’s license within 90 days of employment. Must maintain an acceptable driving record and be insurable under the City’s vehicle insurance policy.
  • Employees are encouraged to obtain approved certifications that support Public Works operations. Certifications may qualify employees for specialized duties, pay adjustments within the established pay range, and certification incentive pay as approved by the City.
Additional Information:

Possession of a valid Texas Commercial Driver License (CDL) is valued and may enhance an employee's ability to perform a broader range of Public Works operations but is not required for this position. Based on operational needs, employees may be requested to obtain and maintain the appropriate CDL to perform specialized assignments or operate designated equipment. Employees who obtain and maintain the appropriate CDL may be eligible for a CDL stipend in accordance with City policy.
